tOSU - CBS.online NC / Playoff Discussion

Expand # of Bowl games to 32 (currently 28 - that's 4 more)
Use first round of bowl games to sort mid-majors (unless ranked highly) from each other.
Use second set of sixteen bowl games as feeders to final BCS heirarchy of bowls (with one rotating exception). This also means keeping the timing of bowls in this second tier pretty much as is.
Each year one of the BCS bowls is the 13th of these 16 bowl games played as feeders for the semi-final and final bowl games.
Final BCS bowl is of course the championship game - last years 13th game BCS bowl becomes this years championship game.

And I agree with Jax that some type of seeding as per NCAA Basketball would help smooth things out in this regard.

How would you get fans to attend up to possible 4 bowl games out of their geographical region?

Do you watch some of these pre-Christmas bowls that feature WAC #3 vs Sun Belt #2?

A Top-16 program like Ohio State would draw more casual fans from Arkansas to the WeBlow Bowl than Arkansas State ever would. Even if some of these bowls were only half filled, it'd be an improvement for the sponsors.

They deserve it because they win their conference. In basketball, does Farleigh Dickinson deserve a bid over the 7th place team in the Big 10? Sure they do. Why should schools be eliminated before the first game of the year? If scUM is at 8-3 and whines about being passed over for Bowling Green, tell them, "Beat OSU next year"

Nobody said the teams in the playoffs have to be the BEST teams. The NCAA tournament doesn't have the BEST 65 teams either.

Perhaps, but they certainly do have the best 16. Playoffs have to be about the best teams. And yes, if TSUN plays a tough schedule and ends up 8-3 then they deserve to go to a bowl ahead of Bowling Green unless Bowling Green plays a comparable schedule and earns their stripes.

Sure, the minnows get into the NCAA but they don't make it to the Sweet 16. By definition, Mili wants to start with a Sweet 16.

What about the physical dimension of these games? Basketball is physical, but not like football. It's not like football players can play four games in two weeks.

What about a 16 team tournament, with some way to play your way in for say eight teams and the rest by some formula and then concurrent NIT for the next 16? That would mean that the top 20 would be have a chance to play for the title and those who didn't play their way in could get a bye in the NIT.

I don't know that I agree with that but can see your point.

The whole point of bowl games is to draw tourists to boost the local economy. Do you think a bowl game wants a bunch of locals driving to the game and then driving home and not filling up the hotels and restaurants?

No, of course not. But Ohio State, or Texas, or Big State University is going to have A LOT of fans that aren't shelling out $1000 for a travel package and $300 - $500 for a bowl game. I'm sure there are 100,000 Big State University fans and alum that would, however, happily drop $200 bucks to travel to Mobile, AL and $50 for the ticket to see Ohio State play in the BCS Sweet 16.

I would rather drop $1000 and take a two week hiatus to follow Ohio State to two playoff round sites against two appropriately equal big name opponents than $2000 and a one week hiatus for the Final in The Big Game at the End.

Follow up ... I'm sure Boise, ID is seeing a HUGE boost in it's economy from Boise St playing in it's own bowl game every year. :wink2:

All these Sun Belt teams are in the deep south and playing in a deep south hosted bowl, while all the WAC teams are on the west coast and playing in west coast hosted bowls. Those fans don't have a travel expense as it is. Compound this with the fact that an Ohio State or Oklahoma or USC or Miami Fla will have more fans in every state than that states own small universities ...

I added 'Playoff Discussion' to the thread title.

That way it's easier for those who want to jump in to do so, and Thump's searches for these posts in the future can be limited to thread titles, which makes things much easier to find. :wink2:

I don't know about most others but I can't just take a "two week hiatus" to attend a couple of bowl games.

Well, obviously. It's probably too hot in those southern stadiums for you anyway. :wink2:

Put it another way. Let's say that the NCAA announced today that USC and Ohio State were playing a football game in Southern Cal tomorrow night. Which team do you think would have more fans show up? Do you honestly think, for one moment, that this game would not be sold out?

But you have to remember, the bowl games have binding agreements with the cities they are located in.

I think that most of these agreements only extend through January, 2010 - which is the same timeframe for which the current BCS agreement will prevent any real playoff from happening.
