Game Thread tOSU at NW'ern, Oct 5, 8 ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2

Um, Mushburger went to Northwestern.

I did note that when ESPN showed the highlights, they made the 4th down stand seem controversial, when there really was no controversy that came from the replay. It was pretty obvious they didn't get the 1st down, but whatever. There was an official looking right at the ball the whole time.
I was reading their boards this morning and they, surprisingly, have the exact opposite opinion. I've been looking for a video online but can't find it.

Something else i thought was really strange. ..when they showed the replay for that play, the yellow computer generated first down line was jumping all over the place. I've never seen that happen before. I'm not claiming a conspiracy, but it was moving backwards.

Not sure if already posted or explained, but, what was Urban doing when they let the play clock run down and burned a time out on the punt late in the 4th quarter?

I'm not totally sure either, but they actually burnt 2 time outs. My guess is that he wanted to see how NW lined up, (i.e. block or return); and make sure the team was ready for it. It was 4th and 8 so it wasn't like an off sides call on NW would have gotten a first down. Cam Johnston got off a great punt (38 yards and out of bounds at the 16, i.e. no return). NW got the ball there (16 yard line) with 22 seconds and no time outs left. That pretty much insured the win.

Besides Mushburger, at least 2 more prominent ESPN talking heads are NW alums...Mike Greenberg and Mike Wilbon.

I thought that Colter could have been down when he bent down to pick up his fumble. It looked like his knee on on the ground as he picked up the ball. Kirk Herbstreit mentioned it once, but nothing more was said about it.

The yellow line is 100% unofficial and (I could be wrong but) I don't think the referees even see it in their "official reviews".

That was a side effect of how the whole "yellow line" thing works - the way it is projected is only accurate from a direct side view. When we saw it from behind center, it was impossible to actually tell where it was. That's what ESPN pounced on, but it was pretty obvious that the ball was against the QB's stomach, and his stomach was in line with his head. From the side view, you can see that his helmet was not even close to the yellow line, and he was lucky if he even got the ball past the line of scrimmage.

Here's a non scarlet view.

Hyde is a beast, he won the game for OSU, Miller got Devin/Denard turnover disease which made the game closer than it should have been.

As for your defense, I still believe the issue is Fickle and his play calling, he's just not a good game caller, I would bet UM switches this up. You have studs on D, so there is no reason to have these struggles IMO.

This game was a lot of fun to watch, it was just a good football game, and UM going nuts over the TO he lost was great. His face was peer anger.
His name is Fickell.

Regarding the 4th down replay: the camera angles they were showing were terrible and didn't prove anything one way or the other regarding the spot. That is the definition of inconclusive and they were 100% correct to uphold the call.

That said, the one angle that would have given a better view of the play, that a camera wasn't covering, just so happened to be exactly the angle the ref who spotted the ball was viewing the play from.

Yeah, but I've never seen it jump like that. I know it's not official and all that.

I saw that too. But I thought that was because of the 90 degree angle since that view was essentially from behind the line of scrimmage. I really thought that view was useless other than determining that the knee wasn't down when he picked up he ball. Beyond that, it was a waste of time showing it.

While you are right in terms of number of starts and years, he is obviously still learning the reads or he would not miss so many of them. As a second year starter in this offense everyone feels he should be able read the DE by now but he is not consistant with that yet.
This was the first game I can recall where he missed so many reads...up until this game he had been really good at reading the DEs. Should just write this off as a bad game...

Braxton running the read option has been discussed in the past and many people, including myself, believe that he has and continues to struggle mightily with it.

I agree with your statement that he's not learning the reads. He's been here long enough, he knows what to do. But I disagree with the notion that this was just one bad game. He's really not very good at it and it's especially noticable when Guiton comes in and does it well.

I love Braxton and am glad he's our man at QB, but I don't find his running of the read option to be particularly good. Fortunately he IS quite exceptional at other aspects.

it's pretty well known that he has been weak to bad in this department for his first two years. Much of September he did not do much reading as they had him hand off a lot of those looks to keep him healthy. He looked better this year but the sample size was quite small.

The reason it was likely lost on Mili is because herbie was a rare announcer that commented on it (fairly). While it is plain to see he also has plenty of inside knowledge to draw from on Braxton and his skills and weaknesses.

Denard was one of the most electrifying runners to wear the winged helmet. Yet I never ever heard an announcer analyze his reads. Had they done their jobs, they would have noticed that he predesignated his reads and wasn't actually an option quarterback at all under rich rod.

Miller has far more arm talent and potential than Denard but both were great pure runners that struggled greatly to run the option and even scramble. Miller is good at running around. He has been poor at managing the pocket or even tucking and going like a typical run first QB. The same was true for Robinson. Now Braxton has improved some this off-season but the notion that Braxton struggling to read the option is a new thing is a pretty unsupportable stance.

It is the reason so many have called for the backup who has half the arm strength and a third of the raw athleticism. But unlike Braxton he makes quick reads and pressures the defense much more at the mesh point. There are often times where Kenny plays faster than Miller. Now after five yards his athleticism is exposed (though solid) when comparing the two. But Miller does an average at best job of making decisive choices in this offense. Guiton makes quick ones.
