Game Thread tOSU at NW'ern, Oct 5, 8 ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2

I've seen the bucks live two weeks in a row and what I come away with is that Washington and Bosa get held a lot, that the DBs play soft, and that I see a good many passing plays in which a DB and a linebacker seem to be guarding each other while a zone sits open.

My knowledge of football coaching is limited, but that doesn't seem right. Could some of you with more coaching knowledge enlighten me?

I'm sure I have even less football coaching experience than you; unless of course you have "negative coaching experience". Anyway I'll go out on a limb here and say that is what is called a "missed assignment" by at least one of 2 defensive players.

Lack of coaching experience has never stopped anyone from opining on these boards.

Vegas took a beating but Buckeye faithful made $1oo million dollars!

Lost in the 4th down stand was the previous outstanding play by Curtis Grant. He made an outstanding tackle on 3rd down.
Kudos, Mr. Grant! Well done defense! We have outstanding goal line defense! :vrabel:

Did anyone else notice how the energy went out of the ESPN team when we took the lead in the fourth quarter? Obviously, ESPN was pushing for the big upset for more than just the excitement value. They wanted the Big Ten's best to get knocked down on national TV. That way the whole conference takes a big hit.
Suck it, ESPiN!

That tin foil hat you're wearing? Does it make your head sweat a lot?

Not sure about all of that. I do know that they didn't seem to want to show the replay of the Hyde TD reach. It took almost 84 seconds before they did. I thought Brent was a little silly with the whole "You gotta be careful with the angles" line.

Fumbling is bad offense. And when one of your units is giving up chunks of yardage, that's bad defense. It doesn't mean that every aspect of the offense or defense was bad. The O line was dominant and Carlos ran very well. The D line is coming.

It was good enough to beat NW - but I want to beat Alabama, Oregon, etc. They will have to get some things buttoned down to get the chance to do that. We'll see.

I disagree with the notion that fumbling is bad offense. That seems to be more of an individual issue, as Mili said. I guess it may be different if the entire o-line collapses and 3-4 defenders hit a running back at the same time, causing him to fumble. But, of course, that's not what happened on OSU's fumbles in the NW game. Brax had 200+ yds passing, Philly had 100+ yards receiving and Carlos could not be stopped. 450+ total yards is "on the whole" bad? GMAFB.

As for the defense, you must not be familiar with Venric Mark. I'll leave it to you to do a little research, but suffice to say that holding him to 3.5 ypc on 17 carries is no small feat. The defense may not have been perfect, but to say it was "on the whole" bad is just ridiculous.

This may come as a surprise to some OSU "fans" but just because OSU doesn't win every game 76-0 doesn't mean the team played a bad game.

That's why I read and occasionally post on this forum - because you learn many interesting things about football. I had always thought that fumbling was bad offense, but you guys make great points. I rewatched the game with this in mind, and I now think the offense was somewhere between very good and outstanding. It's also a mind opener to learn that yielding 30 points and getting out-gained represents good defense. I'm slow, but learning.
