tOSU at Nebraska, Nov 6th, 12pm ET, FOX

I come over here for sanity. This is what I have to deal with. This is a conversation between a buddy of mine and me about the current football team:

Friend: Again, one half of football where they were behind and playing catch up. Look, the offense has been subpar, obviously. The fact still remains that they play harder and are not getting outmatched by elite teams anymore. They had chances to win every game they played against 3 teams in the top 10 of the CFB rankings. Two you could say they should've one. I would take that over them getting routed and having no hope at all.

Me: But saying "we lost close" is still saying "we lost." Doesn't matter how you lose - did you lose? Losses = loss of revenue

Friend: Not when you compare it to what was happening with previous coaches against elite level teams.

Me: So you're saying that Frost deserves to keep his job because he's not getting blown out by teams?

Friend: I'm saying that the program is in better shape then it was and if Trev decides to keep him for another year it wouldn't bother me.

Me: I see

Friend: It also wouldn't bother me if he gets fired for not being able to get over the hump in those games.

Me: And you're basing the "better shape" on the margin of victory of games?

Friend: No, I'm basing better shape on what I see on the field from a physical and playing hard point of view.

Me: I guess I'm looking at this much differently than you are

Friend: With Callahan, Pelini, and Riley the teams were physically outmatched. They were destroyed walking into the building with good to elite level teams. This team is not. This team can keep up with them. Now, their are maddening mistakes that are happening that need to be fixed either by this staff or another, but they are closer then they were before.

Me: We'll see in about 24 hours, 17 minutes

There is a part two of this conversation...
Are you sure your friend is not a Xichigan fan?

Are you sure your friend is not a Xichigan fan?

I can confirm he's not a scUM lover.

And Part Two of the convo (can't wait for your responses):

Friend: I don't think so, Ohio State's offense is rolling and their defense is playing better. Last week they put up 33 points on Penn State and Penn State hasn't allowed more than 23 all year. And that was by Iowa who had a pic six.

Me: Did you watch that game last week? Cause I've seen every Ohio State game this year, and trust me, they've got defensive issues. Those issues stem back two years. Their fans are pretty worried about the rest of the season.

Friend: Yeah, last week was bad defensively but the 4 games prior to that they hadn't allowed more than 17 points.

Me: I'll have to tell them your thoughts, LOL - they'll get a kick outta that.

Friend: Also, fans is short for fanatics so I'm not going to put too much stock into what they think especially a fan base that is used to an elite team being dominant. For them any drop off is going to freak them out.

Me: Uh, you do know that Ohio State is one example of a team that has been dominant for a very, very long time, right? They haven't had much drop off in the last...I donno....50 years?

Friend: That's my point. Their fans have had it very good, so any small regression like defensively they are going to overblow it. I know, Iived it with Nebraska after Tom left.

Me: ehhh, i'd say that they know more than most fans of what they're looking at...of a long term level of excellence. one losing season in 50 years, pretty darn good. Sorry, two

Friend: I know, you are proving my point to me. They expect a certain level, when it falls even a tiny bit off that level they panic.

Me: If you say so, LOL

AVOIDING THE TRAP GAME
Coming off of a tough win over Penn State, this week is all about avoiding a letdown. The Buckeyes learned that lesson all too well in 2017 – a season that played out in extremely similar fashion to this season through its first eight games – when they suffered a 55-24 loss at Iowa one week after a 39-38 win over Penn State.

Going on the road to play a team that’s seemingly better than its record indicates is the recipe that often leads to a trap game. That said, the Buckeyes haven’t lost a single Big Ten game nor a regular season road game yet in Day’s tenure as head coach. For the last three years, Ohio State has avoid the unexpected losses to unranked teams that struck Urban Meyer’s last three teams in Columbus, and Day needs to make sure that remains the case this week as the Buckeyes play their second-to-last road game of the regular season.

“You watch across the country, week in and week out, a lot of things have happened this year,” Day said. “So we can’t let that happen to us, and we can’t have any regrets. And the only way to do that is to focus on right now and not be distracted. If you start looking ahead, if you start worrying about tomorrow, that’s where you get distracted, and we’ve gotta stay disciplined in that area.”

Penn State is always a banger. And after a banger - the hangover.

The Buckeyes cleared a big hurdle Saturday night in finally admitting the Nittany Lions into the Five Straight Losses to Ohio State Club that already claimed every other B1G program as a member. Hooray, high-fives all around (no high-fours in that club, not anymore).

Unfortunately, Penn State in the rearview mirror reliably means there are icebergs, right ahead. Ohio State's post-Nittany crises have ranged from uncomfortably choppy to outright disasters.

Another great article by Ramzy Nasrallah, don't suffer a "Penn State hangover" and let Nebraska be a trap game.

I kinda want bangers and mash now

@alexhortdog95 I actually believe both you and your friend are right in that conversation. The only thing missing from your team, since Frost has been there, is a QB that only plays for his team not both. You are correct though in what should happen and losing by a little or a loss, is a loss. Ohio State does not tolerate losses. Nebraska used to not tolerate losses.

Losing Wandale off your Offense was seriously harsh for you but Martinez is only going to have success against the Buckeyes running it. He had some success doing that last game, so did the backup if I recall correctly, but then the INTs happen and hope is dashed. This team is a lot closer to a complete team than we have been in a few years so I'm hoping it's not close. But, hope is the same thing as a close loss, it doesn't end up a W on the schedule.
