tOSU at Minnesota, Thurs. Sep 2nd, 8 ET on Fox

Take a look at https://www.williamleiss.com

I was just talking with him yesterday about this. FWIW, he played at TCU.

Anyhow, we were discussing his analytics and one of the topics that came up in conversation was the most important features in his models. He’s using ML models that I use in my work every day. Those of you who have gone through stats class with regression, think of features being predictors in a regression model… just terminology difference.

Anyhow, net, net… overall performance, per his models, is best predicted by ‘overall receiving yards returned.’ We agreed that with CO2, Wilson, JS-N we were sitting pretty. Add to that Fleming, Harrison, Egbuka and the rest of the cast and as we know, if the WR room is a significant predictor of success (or the most significant predictor), we’re in great shape.

I then said, something to the effect of “that’s great, but it takes two people to create receiving yards. One guy to catch the ball and the other guy to throw it…” Obviously, I was pointing out that CJ is unproven.

His response was that he looked at that as well. Pretty much said that if you’ve got great receivers an above average QB will do.

I’m like most of you here, I’ll feel better when the clock goes to 0:00, but I’m still fairly confident that the team will be OK. As said, in the event that they go to a ground game, with that OL and the backs we have, and the fact that our receivers actually block… I think that the ball doesn’t even need to go in the air to get the W.

You guys are cracking me up with these predictions for Minnesota. 30 points vs the Buckeye Defense, one dimensional? No freaking way. Ibrahim is a really good back but the rest of his team is mediocre. What have the Buckeye Defenses done the last several times vs great backs? They'll load up and make the Minny Qb beat us. The guy who had 7tds to 5ints last year and lost Bateman from the Offense. Let's not even discuss how overmatched their Defense is against this Buckeye Offense. Look for this game to be similar to their Iowa game last year Buckeyes 48-17

I remember a time a few decades ago when all of the sports broadcasters were seriously drinking the kool-aid for a small college quarterback. He played at some place called Mississippi Valley State and his stats were incredible. And oh by the way, the same team has a receiver that is pretty good too. Some guy by the name of Jerry Rice.

what was the quarterback’s name?
Not the foggiest clue; and that’s the point.

It turns out that said quarterback was pretty freakin’ ordinary.

it wasn’t all COVID that made Tanner Morgan look mortal last year. As @Bestbuck36 said, losing Rashod Bateman was a big part of it. I’m not saying Bateman is anything like Jerry Rice, and I’m not saying Morgan is the MVSU QB that no one remembers.

The point is that @sparcboxbuck and @Bestbuck36 are on to something here. A great receiver can make a big difference. We saw it with MVSU decades ago when they lost Rice, last year when Minnie lost Bateman.

I wonder what a whole roomful of great receivers can do?
Coached by Brian Hartline.
Thrown to by a qb that we have good reason to believe is well above average.
With an o-line that has enormous potential.
With seriously enviable options at running back
With a very good tight end room
Schemed by Ryan Day

Yeah, ok, fine. Minnesota got some transfers that will seriously upgrade their defense.

That ought to help against Purdue.

They have Bell, two fairly good TEs and a 3 year starter at QB. I don't think the fear is there to burn us with big plays. The worry on my end is an Iowa type of performance. Small but good RB behind a massive OL and RPO/Playaction off of it. They only need first downs and they can certainly do that.

For a first game vs a team with a ton of returning players 30 points isn't very hard to see.

That 2019 year was misleading too because they had Johnson and Bateman at WR with both playing in the NFL now. Not only that but 2019 saw Ibrahim as their #3 back behind a few kids who were out of 2018 due to injury. That 2019 Gopher Offense was actually pretty deep.

Provided we can stop the run maybe we can see a 10-21 point performance by our defense. With their excitement and new wrinkles though I think they find some success because of that. They'll win some battles up front though. Knowing the local team well this OL they have will be the best our team plays all year minus our guys which they face in practice.

Luckily our DL is by far better than theirs and our skill is by far better.

And we have a legitimate 8 man rotation to throw at that Oline all game. The second half should be a dominant one barring injury or dramatic mistake. I have a lot of confidence in this game for the secondary showing out. The LBs are the biggest question mark in my opinion.

I think we go deeper than 8 IMO but I get your point. Also yes I think the 2nd half is where we pull away like the Indiana game from 2017. Also yeah the LBS vs their RB/TE is the interest for me. Apparently involving their backs and tight ends as receivers has been a priority all camp for the Gophers.

If we clean up in this game like a 52-14 score then I think we walk through our schedule with no game closer than 10 points. Because obviously I think MN is pretty good this year.

You're right and it's coming. This team is deep everywhere on Offense and D line. If the back 7 develop into a Silver Bullets D then it should be a ridiculously good season. I already placed my $200 on this game and $100 for the Nati. I'm counting on daily competition making this a phenomenal team.

Odd that maybe our toughest 2 game stretch is to open the season but might as well get battle tested early.

Not the best comparison, as the Iowa game saw our team walk in Ames overlooking Iowa. We thought showing up would beat them. Same thing happened against Purdue. I don't see Day run teams having that same arrogance, because he's never won the big one. He's still hungry and hasn't seen the national success that Urban had. And on top of that, it's the first game for a new QB, new RB, new OL, new DL, new LBs and possible new DBs to show what their made of Nz erase the ending of how 2020 ended

Iowa City big guy lol... as for thinking we can show up? What's not to believe we think that right now? We have top 10 ranked Oregon the week after and we are 13 point favorites.

IMO it's much better to be weary of this game instead of confident.

Didn’t seem like they showed up in Iowa City, maybe they were in Ames.

Thanks for pointing out the correct location, lol
And the reason why I don't think this team believes it can show up is easy:
52-24!
The last time that the CFB world saw tOSU play, we were getting our asses handed to us on national television. You don't think that these kids want to avenge that, start their own chapters and come out with big W? I sure do.

I'm confident in this game and the team seems so as well. When we played Iowa, IMO we bordered on arrogance. And that's the difference. We can be weary of every team we face on the field. But Minny has a very good RB and OL, suspect QB and average WRs, and the defense is a question mark. But I don't see them stopping our offensive firepower. And I also don't see them overlooking Minny with so many new starters in the 1st game and knowing they have an even harder game th next week
