Tom Herman (Former Head Coach FAU Owls)

He is certainly on par but he is not as consistent. He also eliminates too much of the playbook due to what a defense has a reputation of doing. If we could run for 200+ on PSU that was giving up 60 yds on average then we should've been able to throw the ball with better results too because after all after a while they were specifically trying to clog the running lanes

How is he on par? What credentials does he have compared to:
L Johnson
C Ash
S Drayton
Warinner
Fickell
Meyer

He has to be the weakest link, and it's not even really that close. I want him to be excellent, but he's not. And there have to be some excellent OC's out there who would LOVE to work at tOSU under UFM.

He does have the whole record book thing going on for him from last year so....

Look he needs to loosen up for big games and just find his rhythm for teams with a great D but by no means is he a weak link for us. IMO as i keep saying his fault is entering a game with a certain opinion of a defense and basically having a "do not call list". He just needs to trust our guys to execute, keep all of our options on the table, and continue to call plays he thinks can help us win.

Why is it so difficult to keep his TE's involved in the game plan? He has one of the, if not the, most talented TE's in the country. Yet they can't get the ball to him after the first quarter.

I'm still patiently waiting for him to bring everything together. It's hard not to notice the weak link though.
I agree. And I was thinking about it earlier, clearly this guy has some offensive design and playcalling talent. He's had moments and strung together some masterful drives and plays, yes mostly against the cupcakes, but he's called decent periods against good competition too.

I just have no clue what goes on when the going gets tough. And I have to believe there are things that a coordinator can do to alleviate some of the problems that seem to compound or build at the first sign of the players struggling. He doesn't seem to have a grasp of that. Like I've said before, Mike Tyson- "Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth" comes to mind.

He's young and smart, but we're not talking about a rookie coordinator anymore and the same mistakes and shortcomings continue to show up.

tl;dr- I like him, but I expect him to be better, too. Just not at a point to dismiss him altogether. Yet.

Last year's record book includes 2 losses to close out the year.

Does he coach the defense because that is where those two games were lost.

Of course the defense's issues were well documented. And I understand you're trying to deflect some of the criticism away from Herman. I don't try to imply that the losses and close wins have been ALL his fault. However, there has clearly been some pretty bad playcalling/gameplanning in those 2 losses, along with the one loss this year.

Lets just leave this at that TH has to keep the playbook open, stay aggressive, and most of all make adjustments. However, a weak link he is not. He's a good recruiter and the players seem to like him. Does he leave some to be desired against tough defenses? Absolutely but some of that blame has to go on Urban too
