Agreed. OSU was getting anywhere from 5-8 yards up the middle with Hyde all night. Yet Herman insisted on taking shots down the field that weren't being completed and were hamstringing the offense--it would be 2nd and 10 instead of 2nd and 3 or 4. In a lot of ways, Herman was the OSU offense's own worst enemy last night. I thought the same in the Michigan game too. It was almost like he was trying too hard to be balanced on offense, and doing so became a detriment. The way OSU was running the ball at will, there's no way OSU should've only scored 24 last night. Especially with no turnovers.

The OSU offensive line was just punishing MSU with the run, and yet Herman consistently went away from it in favor of a passing game that wasn't working (Brax was only 8/21 for 101 yards).

While Herman laid an absolute egg last night, the head coach is ultimately responsible for overriding whatever comes from the booth or ask for a certain package. So I will put it again on Meyer. This is not the first game Herman has showen the tendency of not sticking with the obvious. The head coach gets paid the big money to help point out the obvious. He did not. The coaches as a bunch lost the game last night from Fickel (must go) to DB coach (must go) to Herman (to be talked to) to Meyer (donate his pay check, apoligize to his players for his performance, take full responsibility, take action ASAP).

Meyer did say he made the 4th and 2 call. There has to be some kind of conversation between Meyer and Herman during the fourth quarter about what is going on and what to do about it.

I think what's the most frustrating thing (at least for me)....is we have had a weapon on offense that has proven to be useful. And when we have been tested, we shy'd away from that weapon. Of course this weapon is Hyde.

Last night, Hyde was dominant. In the 4th quarter, for whatever reason we got away from it. And for whatever reason, we decided to run designed QB draws.

I don't have a problem running QB draws, but when they are so stinking obvious, it is useless.

I find this very difficult to swallow plus there are few more quotes from the article linked that are quite hard to believe coming from our OC.
But there was something to be said for running Hyde until the Spartans absolutely shut him down. And that never happened. I asked Herman if he thought Hyde should have carried it more.

“Coming off the field, I didn’t feel that,” Herman said. ““I don’t know. I’d have to see. But from our vantage point, they made some adjustments, so we have to readjust a little bit what we were calling at that point. There’s always a thousand things you have could have done differently in games like that so we’ll sit back and watch the film.”

Also, whatever happened to Wilson? I saw very few misdirection plays and I thought one of the reasons we recruited Wilson was to run jet sweeps or whatever. I guess I would not be too bothered about the play calling but the same thing happened When we played that other teamf rom up north. Even though we won that game Carlos should have run the ball much more or even Jordan Hall.

I still have confidence in Coach Herman. He had a bad game. It happens. He's still a young coach and sharpening his skills, his eye and his judgement.

I think he called a game last night that looked better in theory than in practice. I think he recognized what MSU was doing in terms of scheme and called for plays and formations that should have countered those things. I think where things went wrong is that MSU's players made some great individual and team plays to overcome play calls that should have worked for Ohio State. Conversely, Ohio State did some things that in theory probably shouldn't have worked, but because players made great individual and team plays to overcome it they were able to succeed. The plays that should have worked in theory didn't and the plays that shouldn't have worked did. When the chips were down, I think he trusted theory and scheme instead of his players that were making plays and getting the results in spite of what MSU was trying to do to stop them.

I can't help but think of the anecdote that Meyer has from when he was a position coach at ND, where he had a player crying because he wasn't getting the ball and he could have helped his team win. Meyer says he resolved that he would go out of his way to make sure his best players always touched the ball. I think him and Herman got away from that last night. It's a tough way to get a reminder about one of your core principles.

It was an instant reaction. I'm more interested in what he has to say after watching film and speaking with Coach Meyer.

Lord knows he isn't the only one who has had something stupid to say about the way things went in this game because they hadn't taken the chance to stop and think it over a bit.

that was a very difficult assignment for Jeff to get that block the way MSU had their defense and they were ready for that play. read the article linked
Meyer and Herman agreed they wanted to go with Miller on that play.

Agreed. Honestly, I thought he did a pretty damn solid job until that 3rd/4th down sequence. A couple of those deep shots that he called were there, they just weren't executed. One of those connects, it's likely a totally different ballgame. In fact, IIRC, one would have put tOSU up 2 scores.

He needs to loosen up in big games. I think this was as bad as Wisconsin last year, which he admitted was his worst game. He starts narrowing in on a few plays which he thinks will work, mainly the inverted veer, which takes the offense and puts it into the hands of the most talented player on the field. Unfortunately, this doesn't work when the entire defense knows who that is and brings the numbers down to defend it.

Call it loose, play it loose.
