Tom Herman (Former Head Coach FAU Owls)

IMO, The offensive coaching staff has done a horrible job at utilizing depth and rotating their playmakers in and out, primarily in the big or close games.

Against Wisconsin, Hall never really took the field when the running game was struggling. Neither did Rod Smith or EzE. Hyde was lackluster at less than 90 yards. The Bucks NEEDED a rushing attack to be established but the coaching staff didn't do much about it.

This week the offensive attack had zero spark and despite that EzE still rode pine along side our biggest speedster, Dontre Wilson. Also, Fields ddin't get his hands on the ball at all. The NW game was pretty much the "Hyde and Miller show". It was predicable and if we were playing a Top 5 team, they would have opposed much better.

My thoughts is that if you are going to go and recruit the special players that can provide a spark - USE THEM! Stop going to a dry well in a game.
We punted only 3 times (+ the fake punt) and put up 250 yards rushing at over 5 per carry. The running game was working better as the game wore on. I know that doesn't fit your narrative, but I'll take that for any game against any opponent.

Jesus.... SERE Thank God Ohio State's won 18 in a row. What the fuck.

Nice to meet you Mr. Pot, Im Mr. Kettle....You are a VERY opinionated poster and just like you I have my opinion on things as well. Meyer admitted that Roby didn't have his best game, but everyone talked about it. Now Meyer admits there has been a snag in player rotation, but Im not supposed to? lol

This isn't Tressel, our captains don't have to be seniors. Meyer has said it time and again that the best man will find himself on the field regardless of seniority/class. Players just seem to dissapear through a bunch of games this year. Are we winning? Absolutely. Am I happy? Sure as Hell am. However, when you know you have playmakers that can go out and ball, yet they don't see the field we are having an issue. Im not sure where the break down is. Are the coaches just trying to sit on a lead in big games? Is going for the jugular only good against a lower-tier team, and they think we can't do that with young guys playing?

Now, Im not sure how me showing my displeasure has spurned this into a "the sky is falling crap" when I see much of you guys crying over our Defense Backs, Fickell, Defensive play calling, AD, etc.

** We are running lots of dynamic offensive plays every week, we just don't show them all during the games. Think the staff might find time to work on plays all week that never get run in the games? I sure do. I think that's what great coaches of great teams do. They tinker behind closed doors.

1. We took a 10 point lead into the half against Wisky and extended it to 17 in the 3rd while holding them scoreless that period. Braxton's first game back and he looked sharp passing, throwing 4 TDs.
2. We got behind early against NW on a rain soaked field. Brax had an uncharacteristically poor night and and Hyde kept getting better as the game carried on. The road Hyde all the way out of Evanston.
3. Both of these games had 2 things in common: toughest opponents on our schedule who also happen to be conference foes. You can't lose these games. Just get the win baby.
4. Our defense is/was/still is our biggest liability so offensive play calling is made with this in mind.

Think about these points when you reflect on the first 4 games as well. During those first 4 games we saw flashes of greatness in Dontre, Zeke, etc but really saw very little of our total potential.

With this perspective think about something logically. We haven't see anywhere near the full amount of our offensive weapons/schemes in the first 6 games for the reasons described. What will happen with the back half of the schedule is we have 6 games spread around 2 bye weeks. Could this set up any better to try new things and flex some muscle? We still won't show all of our cards though. We will Hyde them. I mean, we pulled a few 2 point conversions against Buffalo for no other reason than to screw with some defensive/special team coordinators down the road. I look at play calling throughout the season as an evolving strategy to keep future opponents off guard, while working on little things that nobody sees. Let them focus on some of our early tendencies. That will help Dontre when he does take one to the house.

Seems to me that the staff is playing some serious poker while doing what they have to do in order to keep winning. All the while, hoping our defense will take shape. This happened last year, our D played MUCH better in the second half of the season. We are seeing gamesmanship at the highest level IMO. We are also seeing the staff work to find and correct our weaknesses. There are so many things going on with this team that I bet most of us would be blown away to know the staff's master plan week in and week out.

Gotta remember NW had two weeks to plan and prepare. Braxton fumbled the ball twice, one was right down near the goal line. Braxton also missed a wide open receiver in the end zone. We are talking the difference between 3 points and 14 points. I did scratch my head a bit at the play calling in the red zone on our very first drive and there are questionable calls from time to time but overall Herman has done a pretty decent job. Geez, this years offense is the most prolific highest scoring offense in tOSU history so how can anyone possibly complain?

The play calling at Northwestern was heavily influenced by the rain earlier in the day. Ryan Field was a sloww field because of the rain and the length of the field (I read that the grass was ankle length on friday, and while it may have been cut, I can guarantee it wasn't cut short. Home field advantage to neutralize our speed advantage in a big way).

Wilson probably didn't get the ball for that reason since he's pretty small to be running our inside power plays. The one return that he took out, he didn't look like his normal self. It's actually pretty amazing how easily you could see him run that slooowww as opposed to his normal speed. Plus, he's had fumble issues earlier this year and in a close game, we would only lose if we turn the ball over, which we almost did. Probably the same with Rod Smith.

I would bet money that Hall, who they said would be involved in the game before his injury, would have been the one running those inverted veers. Hyde was a beast, and he ran those well, but he left yards on the field because he's not a make you miss kind of back out in space. Maybe you can argue that Meyer should have put in Wilson for those plays, but I trust Hyde to get yardage and to hold onto the ball. In a game where we needed to score on every possession, ball security is the most important.

My only complaint with the offensive play calling is the fake punt. It's 4th and 3; if you want to get momentum, run the ball with Hyde. It was clear from the first quarter that they couldn't stop him. I honestly don't think we should ever run a fake punt as our playmakers on offense are more effective at getting first downs than our punt team + element of surprise.

I checked... I've left no tears on any of the Defense based threads.

I didn't say shit about you being opinionated. So, not quite sure what the discussion of cookware has to do with anything.

AS to the remainder... I say again. 18 wins. Zero losses.
