Offensive coordinator Tom Herman and Ohio State called 86 plays against Miami (Ohio) on Saturday and produced 56 points.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sitting next to offensive coordinator Tom Herman for the first time during a game Saturday, Ohio State fullbacks and tight ends coach Tim Hinton didn't hear a lot of, "Hmm, let's see."
Not while Herman was making 86 play calls in an offense that head coach Urban Meyer expects to get the Buckeyes an extra 25 plays per game over a standard offense.
Intriguing in theory, the offense was balky in execution for the first quarter before all the gears starting turning together in the Buckeyes' 56-10 win over the Miami RedHawks. Next up is Central Florida on Saturday, a tougher test that has the Buckeyes as two-touchdown favorites instead of three-touchdown favorites. It will be the second game of the staff working together, and with the repetition, the calls should only get faster and smoother.
Not that Hinton wasn't impressed Saturday.
"The play caller's got to be really sharp on that next call as soon as he makes the first call," said Hinton, who was seated next to Herman in the press box the entire game, while Meyer gave his suggestions and offered his vetoes from the field. "Sure, we're trying to ID the defense and see what the front is and the coverage and how they played it, but he's already thinking of that next call. It's amazing, but it isn't slow down and look at my call sheet, and here's my best third-and-1 call. It's got to be something that's very ingrained in how you call it. It's a pattern in what you call, and I thought Tom did a phenomenal job of it."
