I can't even imagine the time contraints on that kid, no matter his major. How he didn't go crazy, given the level of celebrity that makes people turn to drugs from the stress, is beyond me.

He was the three-year starting QB for the Florida Gators, a two-time national champion, and a Heisman trophy winner . . . and he's [reportedly] still a virgin. Sounds crazy to me . . .

More proof, if any were needed, that religion poisons everything.

He's still gotta take the requisite Freshman/sophmore classes that everyone at big schools have to take. History requirements, science labs, english, foreign language requirements, perhaps some type of public speaking class...etc

I personally don't much care about either side of the argument here because precious few student athletes take challenging majors. Jeff Davidson was the lone engineering major (Aerospace IIRC) on the football team during my time at Ohio State, and you see precious few engineering majors from any school when you watch games on Saturdays (or Thursdays). There is a reason that CK majoring in molecular genetics is still a topic of conversation; it is rare to see an athlete major in something that is challenging. I do believe however that the Draddy (or whatever it's called now) should go to one of the challenged few, be it engineering or molecular genetics or whatever else that is not kinesiology.

The courses that you refer to, known as Basic Education Requirements (BER) at Ohio State and many other schools, pull the average athlete's GPA down. For an engineering major (at Ohio State and many other schools), BERs are GPA padders. No one I knew at OSU's Engineering Department ever got anything less than an A in a BER (or didn't admit to it). I never met Jeff Davidson, but I bet BERs were pretty easy for him too.

I think that is exactly right.

It should not be difficult for everyone to agree that there is a VAST difference between a home ec degree and a hard science or econ/finance or even a poly sci degree. Also, it shoud not be hard to agree that it does make sense for some football players to take the easier major, either because it is better for them to focus on the field and getting to the league or because they might not be able to handle a different major (or some combination). That being said, it does not mean we should laud this logical choice over the achievements of athletes who took a harder path.

Packin' multiple "real" degrees and I've been getting laid for the last 26 years. Suck on that Tim Tebow! Damn, suddenly I feel so much better about myself. Thanks, Tim Tebow, your healing power is mightier than my bitter soul!

Just thought I'd add:

All those who state that the course schedule of athletes at universities like UF, OSU, etc, are complete jokes, are completely correct. Tebow, without doubt, falls under this category. His 3.66 or whatever is a complete, utter joke compared to many students at UF who are pulling at 3.5.

Athletes cheat. All the time. tOSU athletes, UF athletes, Texas athletes, whatever.. They cheat, and they cheat blatantly, and they don't get caught. It happens all the time...

I think it's important to recognize that Tebow's academic curriculum was not exactly tough by any standards, and he probably spent a total of 10 hours in the library this fall. But I don't understand why he has to be focused on, because it's hypocricy at it's finest--it happens at our beloved Ohio State all the time. Tebow isn't claiming to be a genius, so I don't understand the vitriol.

At the same time, it's pretty bothersome that he got an award that he clearly didn't deserve... I'm going to make an assumption that there are student athletes that actually have decently tough majors that probably should have gotten the award. Oh well.

All I know is I had a better GPA than 3.66 in grad school and I'm a fucking idiot.

He can't do better than that baking fucking undergrad cookies with an army of people ready to help him get an A no matter what?

Speaking of which, how exactly in the hell do you get anything short of a 4.0 in that setting? What the fuck did you get a B in Timmy? Shop?

Thank god we get to see Tim Tebow make the case against abortion during super bowl commercials. I certainly don't see enough of those two as it is, and I for one am glad that the Super Bowl is being checked off the every-shrinking list of things that don't offer Tim Tebow more media exposure or bring up the divisive topic of abortion. Because that's exactly what I want on the TV at the family super bowl party.

*sigh*

Whatever the fuck you did in school Jax, I guarantee that the time constraints on Tebow were crushing, from the interviews, to the team meetings, film study, starting his lifting at 4:30 or whenever the weight room opened, to the practices, games, bowls, Heismann nonsense, to the prison ministry and his going to church to just goofing around like a student. I would guess that you had it massively easy in your studies when you put your free study time next to a guy like Tebow.

You really, really undervalue the pressure and time demands of his career at Florida.
