Tim Beckman (you're fired!)

As long as Beckman's thread got bumped, it's worth noting that most of his staff was in State College this week, although not on PSU's campus. Beckman claims that they didn't violate any NCAA rules in recruiting Penn State players, in that they just showed up and were willing to talk to any PSU players that were interested in looking at Illinois; but his comments yesterday also implied that some phone calls were made by Illinois coaches in order to let some players know that the Illinois staff was in State College.

That may be within NCAA rules, but it's obviously a very aggressive move, and one I would classify as unseemly.

Wow. RT @IllinoisLoyalty Dateline: 1987. Penn State Seeks SMU Players On SMU Campus http://t.co/yutAL9YS

Well, yeah. If Penn State was willing to do it it must be unseemly. At least they have no room to bitch about it, though I'm sure that won't stop them.

Meh. I don't think so.

If kids get turned down by OSU I think they'd likely be pursued by other big time programs in other conferences, and would opt to go to those rather than stay in the Big Ten just because Meyer is coaching there.

Maybe I worded it poorly, but what I was trying to convey is that Ohio State's recruiting classes are going to fill up more quickly than in the past. Or, kids that would've gotten recruited by Tress won't get recruited by Urban and will end up at other B1G schools because the kid will feel its the right fit for them.

Time will tell obviously. So, who knows. I will say that I will most likely be wrong haha.

We'll see. So far, he's landed exactly one kid ranked higher than #34 nationally at his position. He's most certainly a better coach than Zook, but he's gonna have to recruit better than that to be consistently competitive. He's still getting worked in-state, too...

Well, there ya go. Speaking for myself personally, if I had my choices narrowed down to Northwestern and Illinois, I would go to Northwestern.
