As long as Beckman's thread got bumped, it's worth noting that most of his staff was in State College this week, although not on PSU's campus. Beckman claims that they didn't violate any NCAA rules in recruiting Penn State players, in that they just showed up and were willing to talk to any PSU players that were interested in looking at Illinois; but his comments yesterday also implied that some phone calls were made by Illinois coaches in order to let some players know that the Illinois staff was in State College.

That may be within NCAA rules, but it's obviously a very aggressive move, and one I would classify as unseemly.

Not sure how coaches/staffs are supposed to handle this situationa and I have no idea if my Dawgs are looking at any PSU players.

I think respect for the student and his family dictates you wait until they reach out to you, but is it really that unprofessional to reach out to the family if you've previously established a relationship?

Tough call.

I think it's also about the way you "reach out". There's the 45-second phone call where you inform the player that he can contact you if he chooses. Then there's the longer call where you really try to sell him on transferring. Both, I think, are sleazy. One is very much more so.

Also, somewhere like Illinois - they are probably more willing to poach players like this. They've been mostly (completely?) irrelevant since 2001. They want to get any competitive advantage they can, and if that is going to make their peers unhappy, well, so be it. Just my opinion.

He was pretty impressive at the B1G media day. I think if he can keep the better IL talent in state, they'll improve as a program.

I also think this is a school that will benefit from the "Urbz Factor". Let me explain a bit, Urbz will be going after the best of the best, so some talent is going to trickle down to other B1G schools. That means some kids from Ohio or the Midwest who would've previously gotten committable scholarship offers will not, and will probably end up at B1G school like Illinois/Iowa/Michigan State. I think something that points to this, at least on tOSU's end is how spread out our commits have been (CA, MD, MO, NC), where I don't really remember OSU getting recruits from.

But, I'll probably be totally wrong.

Meh. I don't think so.

If kids get turned down by OSU I think they'd likely be pursued by other big time programs in other conferences, and would opt to go to those rather than stay in the Big Ten just because Meyer is coaching there.

We'll see. So far, he's landed exactly one kid ranked higher than #34 nationally at his position. He's most certainly a better coach than Zook, but he's gonna have to recruit better than that to be consistently competitive. He's still getting worked in-state, too...

I can't lie they're decent. I like the fact that they're stepping up their game overall. I consider them up to the level to be a legit rival for the Illini now. I'm not saying they are in the Illini's league but they have some solid players and have now gotten two superstar type of players with Prater and the Ohio DB. Again they still have a long way to catch up talent wise (And will stay that way now that the Illini are going up another level), but they should make things interesting. With those two and Alviti coming in I might actually be able to watch a NW game for an extended amount of time.
Still, with all that said, I do echo the other statements of others...I can't wait for the Illini to stomp NW again this year (And every year).
