Tim Beckman (you're fired!)

Re: Toledo coach Tim Beckman is no home run. But after striking out or passing on more glamorous candidates, Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas is expected to introduce Beckman as the Illini?s new football coach Friday.Obviously, no contract details are out yet. But it wouldn?t be surprising if Beckman, who makes $410,000 at Toledo, receives a deal worth $1.5 million to $2 million a year at Illinois, in the ballpark with Ron Zook, who was making $1.75 million when Thomas fired him last month.

Just so we can have them forever, before they're inevitably deleted:

Beck: Trust me, you are better than Illinois. I almost left for SEC. I stayed & we can be Top-15 next year. Keep rolling! Finish this!

You couldn't pay me enough $ to take certain jobs in big conferences. Some schools are dead-end jobs in some sports. Think two moves ahead.

$ You can't put pricetag on being happy. UTXCTRACK til I die! Orange is not a color I would ever bleed.

To be clear on my tweets. I have utmost respect for Beck. I think he's a great coach and is better than Illinois.

While you shouldn't say it out loud on twitter, it is very true that Illinois is not a destination job. Their realistic ceiling is consistently going 8-4- with some seasons being better and some being worse.

Even if Beckman reaches that ceiling the fans will start expecting more, get greedy, fire him, and start all over.

It is like the mediocre circle of life of unrealistic expectations and greed for middle of the pack programs.

They suck and they just want decent season, a coach takes them to the top of the middle with some 8-4 seasons, before long the fans get restless and want more, they hire someone else to take them to the next level, end up shooting themselves in the foot and start all over hoping to go 8-4 again.

Solid hire by the Illini. A new influx of talented coaches to the Big Ten within the last 2 seasons.

Kevin Wilson, Beckman, Urban, Jerry Kill, Pelini. Should get competitive.
I would add Hoke to that list. I think that, if they don't nuke the whole university, Penn State's infusion of new blood in their program will help make them better too.
