Tim Beckman (you're fired!)

Oklahoma State Univ

Hi there Buckeye's. I've got a lot of buddies from Ohio as I went to school in Flint Michigan. No not MSU or UofM.

Just wanted to get some info on Beckman and didn't see a whole lot on him but I have seen positive post on him. That is a good thing. Our last DC knew how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory! He sucked. It does look as if he is a decent recruiter although he wasnt there to recruit your 2 studs that graduated last year.

Are things looking up for Okla State U? We have a heck of an offense but our defense ranks in the 100's in some areas.

Beckman wasnt a DC but do you give him the vote of confidence for the Cowboys?

Thanks and good luck with your next hire!

So many things to consider here. Do you hire the best technique guy at the position of need? Do you hire someone with recruiting ties to an area that you wish to establish, or solidify, your school's status in? Not only that, who comprises the pool of candidates, and at which position is their expertise? Tough questions to answer. One thing I know is that it is tough to coach up the secondary with only one guy. The way the game has evolved, with the involvement of nickel and dime packages, there are just too many things for one guy to cover. There's man techniques, zone techniques, run rotation, formation alignments and the corresponding coverage, motion adjustments/coverage checks, pressure packages involving the secondary....the list goes on and on. My personal opinion? I think Heacock does a great job, not only as DC, but developing d-linemen as well. I would hope that we grab an up and coming corners coach, with a fresh recruiting network. Looks like we'll have something to discuss over the next few weeks.

Interesting following the breadcrumbs here.

Michigan secondary coach Ron Lee departs after their Rose Bowl loss. The Michigan Daily characterizes this as no great loss - stating that the secondary play went downhill if anything under his coaching.

Lee’s one-year stint at Michigan was pretty forgettable, as the secondary showed little-to-no improvement as the year progressed. According to some, it actually got worse.

Meanwhile Oklahoma State fired previous TSUN secondary coach and then Defensive coordinator Vance Bedford at the end of the season - his defenses were open to question. Vance's main claim to fame possibly being the secondary coach of the 1997 TSUN championship team (see the Michigan Daily article).

So what of Ron Lee? Well he has been given a life belt in the form of a one-year stint as the cornerbacks coach for the Gophers.

New Gophers coach Tim Brewster has landed assistant coach Ron Lee, who was with Michigan as cornerbacks coach for one season and will coach a Gophers secondary that no doubt needs a lot of improvement.

As the Michigan Daily might have it, good luck with that.

Meanwhile that same rag is a little lukewarm on the return of Bedford, for yes he is back in the halls of the Athletic Department at TSUN, taking on the secondary coaching job vacated by Lee.

My humble opinion: I think the Bedford signing is a pretty solid one, but I am a little apprehensive. Bedford was fired from the Cowboys’ coaching staff at the end of this past season, and though he had success while he was at Michigan, a lot of it was just a product of the talent. I’m not trying to take anything away from him, but I’m pretty sure I could have coached the secondary to relative success in 1997 if I had players like Charles Woodson and Marcus Ray in my defensive backfield.

Which brings us back full circle to the topic of the thread, Tim Beckman. Elevated from secondary coach to defensive coordinator in this move to Stillwater, he, and probably Oklahoma State, are the only clear winners in this trail of breadcrumbs.

All the others are survivors.

Beckman takes new job at Oklahoma State

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Leaving Ohio State is tough, Tim Beckman said, but it?s something he said he needs to do to take another step up the coaching ladder. The cornerbacks coach was named defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State yesterday by coach Mike Gundy. Beckman spent two seasons with the Buckeyes after coming from Bowling Green, where he had been defensive coordinator the previous six.

I wonder if Tressel might consider hiring former buckeye Ahmed Plummer to coach the db's. He is a former first round draft pick. If he was good enough to get picked that high in the NFL I would think he would be able to teach young db's good technique etc. He knows what it means to be a buckeye. He seemed like a great kid while he was playing here. He is around 30 years old and maybe he could relate to the younger kids which could help recruiting. It maybe a good thing to get fresh young blood back into the program. :oh: :io:
