Tiger Woods (Offical Thread)

Must be a hell of a leg if it lasted that long , The one I used only lasted for 27 golfers before it was shreded.

Any activity that has a champion with one good leg can't be a real sport.

I wonder how good in golf you are? It is a hard game and some think it's not a sport, but there is skill in golf.

Ask some of the BP golfers:p

Eh, Ill shoot a 140 on a round of golf.

I know that golf takes skill, as that's why they get paid millions for it.

I just want to know why Tiger is considered a "Top Athlete"

Why don't you consider him a "Top Athlete?" Because he probably can't run a 4.4 40? Because he can't dunk a basketball on an 11-foot rim? Because he can't bench press 400 lbs?

There are plenty of guys in sports that can do that stuff. Find me one that the hit a 320 yard drive down the middle of the fairway, and then stick the approach shot within 10 feet and have the nerves to nail the putt when you have to.

People always question golf as an athletic sport. I say, look at pitchers. All they do is walk to the mound, wind up and pitch the ball. Occasionally they have to field. And in the National League, they get to strike out 3 times a game. But what are they doing that is more physically or mentally demanding than a Tiger Woods? And he's the best at what he does... by a lot.

If Babe Ruth is a great athlete, then so is Tiger. If Greg Maddux is a great athlete, then so is Tiger. If Nolan Ryan was a great athlete, then so is Tiger. If you don't consider any of those guys great athletes, then you just have a different definition of the term.

Could you explain some times he has shown tremendous athleticism? Not skill, raw athletics.

Players in basketball, football, baseball come along all the time who are tremendous athletes but not great technicians. Some, like Hester, are superstars without even being capable of playing CB or WR at the ACC level.

So where is the sign of his tremendous athleticism?

I consider him one of the top sportsmen, and people make the leap that if he's an athlete, and he's arguably the greatest sportsman alive, then he's one of the great athletes. I see no justification for that jump beyond proximity.

Find me a guy who can hit trick shots in pool. Unreal control and skill in his craft doesn't make him an athlete.

Are there not fat men in golf who can make similarly ridiculous shots?

I think his athleticism for his sport is outstanding, and he's perfected his craft and body about as far as can be done. But that doesn't put him in the same zipcode of the complete freaks like Lebron. Conversely, his high potential and athleticism doesn't put him in Tiger's galaxy.

Which one on that list dosen't belong?

Babe Ruth? Are you kidding me?

The All Time Leaders

On Base Percentage:

1) Ted Williams - .482

2) Babe Ruth - .474

Slugging Percentage:

1) Babe Ruth - .690

2) Ted Williams - .634

Run Average:

1) Babe Ruth - .259

2) Lou Gehrig - .236

RBI Average:

1) Babe Ruth - .263

2) Lou Gehrig - .249

Not to mention, this was done during a pitcher dominated era

The Babe as a pitcher:

Win pct: .671
3-0 pitching in World Series games with 2 complete games and 1 shut out

Most of the time in sports, the "great one's" are decided by championships..

10 out of 20 seasons, Babe Ruth's team made the World Series - thats 50% of all seasons he played - he made it to the championship

His team won 7 out of those 10 series.

... Yeahhhh

Babe was a bad example to illustrate that point

I think JWins hit the nail on the head. But, I think for the most part people are referring to to him as an athlete because it is an sport. If you really wanted to find the best athelete it would probably not be anyone in any major sports. (NBA, NFL, MLB, etc.)

Tri-athlons, marathons, wrestlers, rugby are some suggestions

No doubt Tiger is a athlete, but not one of the worlds top.

Some people need to work on reading comprehension.
