Thread of What You've Eaten, Cooked and/or Drunk Lately

When I was a kid I ate lots of "polenta" which really is just corn meal mush. You can eat it cold like a cereal or fry it in bacon grease and eat it with maple syrup. Or you can go to the restaurant below in the South park neighborhood of San Diego and get a small square with a bit of marinara and cheese for 10 bucks

Oh, I had "cheesy grits" that day for breakfast.

Now I haven't had fried mush since the Hayesville Methodist Church pancake breakfast. (Maybe I have, but whatever)

It took me years to understand that I was eating like a rich person in those days. We had fresh free range eggs from out chickens and as many morel mushrooms as you could eat that grew wild around the cabin. Then there were the black berries that grew wild in those parts. I went back there about 20 years and took this picture, the old rancher was still kicking, barely. This is about 15 miles west of Medford OR

I was fortunate enough to grow up knowing both of my grandfathers.

one raised cattle and had a crawfish pond on his ranch.
so we always had beef in the freezer. and boiled crawfish every Friday during the season.

the other was a commercial fisherman who had most of his yard filled with a garden.
so we had fresh vegetables with just about every meal, and seafood pretty much whenever we wanted it.

had no clue growing up how lucky I was.
never thought it was anything special until I had to start paying for food like that.
