Day #125:

The beard is taking over my face. I've been told this is a good thing. It's now curling so much, that it appears to be shorter than it was a month ago. I can now take a bit of hair from just under my ear, at the corner of my jaw, twist it up a bit, and reach my mouth. I can pull a patch of beard under my chin, and almost reach my eye. While sleeping, no drool has reached my pillow in over a month. The only trimming I've done is around my mouth. This doesn't stop hair from entering while eating. I figure if I just chew through it, it'll basically trim itself. I seriously considered shaving, or at least heavily trimming and shaping the day after the Fiesta Bowl. I am now thankfull I did not.

Rest assured that if I do shave one day, it will not be a total cleaning up. I will have some serious chops for at least a week. Maybe even a chin strap like the amish.

BUCKYLE, out.

Eagles coach Reid doesn't believe in beard

20090115_dn_g1eagn15s.JPG

Andy Reid is not at all superstitious, the Eagles' coach said yesterday. That multicolored pelt crawling across his face? Safety Brian Dawkins asked him to take part in a sort of team-unity, beard-growing exercise. Reid doesn't really think the Birds will lose Sunday in the NFC Championship Game at Arizona if he shaves his beard.

If Andy shaves his beard, bad things will happen. I was going to applaud him for growing the beard, as well as the Eagles, and Dawkins for making the request. We'll see which team comes out on top, but I hope it's the beards.

edit: Strictly for the power of the beard, I'm not really an Eagles fan. May the best beard win.

worst tax ever

worst tax ever...
Beard Tax: Information from Answers.com
The beard tax is the best known of a series of measures enacted by Tsar Peter I to transform and regulate the appearance of his subjects. As early as 1698 the tsar ordered many of his prominent courtiers to shave their beards, and in 1699 he began to mandate the wearing of European fashions at court functions. In subsequent years a series of regulations ordered various groups to adopt German (i.e., European) dress. In 1705 decrees were issued prohibiting the buying, selling, and wearing of Russian dress by courtiers, state servitors, and townspeople. In the same year the wearing of beards, which was favored by Orthodox doctrine, was prohibited and the beard tax was instituted. With the exception of the Orthodox clergy, anyone who wanted to wear a beard was ordered to pay a special tax and obtain a token (znak) from government officials. Although no extensive studies have examined the implementation of the beard tax and related decrees, the fact that they had to be repeated upon subsequent occasions would indicate that compliance was far from universal. Old Believers (Orthodox Church members who rejected reforms in ritual and practice) were disproportionately affected by the beard tax and they alone were ordered by law to wear old-style Russian dress (to separate them from the mainstream of society). The beard tax was never a major component of state revenue, and by the reign of Catherine II even the regulations on Old Believers began to be relaxed.
