The pain of being unrivaled

They've been a recruiting rival a lot longer than they've been a conference rival. Before they joined the conference they had a winning record against OSU, 4-2. As a major power in a neighboring state, I would've called them a little bit of a rival in that two decades plus.

But they became more of a rival when they joined the conference in 1993, obviously. If you don't understand that all members of a conference are rivals by definition then I can't help you.

Almost all rivalries are geographic. Do you remember the Big 33 game? It's not just an Ohio State-Penn State rivalry, it's an Ohio-Pennsylvania rivalry. There's a regional culture element to it too.

I'd be more interested in discussing the nature of rivalries, the great historic rivalries, how they evolve over time, how conference expansion affects them, etc., than just shouting "We only have one rival! They're not Michigan! Don't tell me they're our rival!" I'm actually looking for an adult conversation but it seems I'm alone.

That's okay. I was alone when I said OSU and Michigan had to be in the same division or it would kill the rivalry, and I was alone when I said Everett Withers was the problem in 2012-2013 when the rest of Buckeye Nation wanted to fire Fickell. I was also right when I said Thad Matta's second-to-last Buckeye team wasn't good enough to deserve an NCAA Tournament bid and this board banned me for saying so.

By this standard, Notre Dame is our rival. They've historically been our greatest recruiting competition after scUM.

6 games before joining conference wasnt enough to base a rivalry on... and their impact since joining hasnt either.

MSU has ruined 2 NC runs for us in the last 5 years. PSU hasnt done that since the 60s. 16 we went anyway, 08 USC beat them to it, 05 Texas beat them to it, 80 UCLA beat them to it.

They're Wisconsin at best.
The only thing that makes me angry about PSU is enabling a child rapist for decades... and that's just not rivalry material. It disgusts me as a human.

I’m over the rivalry talk, because I don’t agree. And officially, the University doesn’t agree either.

But saying you were alone in thinking the Leaders/Legends thing would kill The Game is complete nonsense. The search function works very well. I’ll just simply laugh at the Withers take. His thread is still available too.
Link to official university position on the Penn State rivalry.

I battled with Buckeye fans on the Scout board during the "Fire Fickell!" years but I visited all the Buckeye forums. I didn't see any deviation here from the mentality everywhere else.

Kindly tell me what search terms I should use to find all the Luke Fickell defenders on this board in 2012-2013. Was there just the one thread dedicated to discussing that specific topic?

I'm gonna call bullshit on this.

When you say nonsense like this, and like Michigan isn't a rivalry anymore bc we kick their ass every year, it makes it easier to rebuff your PSU is a rival claim.

I don’t want to get pulled in to all of the rival/non rival nonsense going on. To each his/her own. I would like to say that outside of scUM, there is no other team I want to beat more or would hate to lose to more than Penn State. Wisconsin is close behind but I respect them more (if respecting them even a little means I respect them more.) Does this make Penn State a rival? To me, there is really only one rival. That’s scUM. Every one else is just a team to which I like or dislike to varying degrees. The whole week leading up to the game against scUM is it’s own thing. For Penn State, I care, but only on game day. I don’t think about them on a Tuesday.

Of course Notre Dame is a rival. It's a cold rivalry because OSU and ND almost never play. But when they do it's a really big deal. The fans really care. And it always matters. Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State are the big three historical Midwestern powers.

Ohio State is in third place in that three-way rivalry when it comes to wins and winning percentage.

Wow the rivalry argument again. The truth is that the mutant cult is a target of righteous hatred for everyone they play. That’s what happens when you worship a moldy corpse that protected a pedophile rapist and your mongloid fan base says shit like no blood no rape.

I hate everything they stand for and want to slit my fucking wrists to the bone when anything good happens to them.

Are they our rival? No, I reserve my real hatred for the douche nozzle vulvarines.

I think you will find that I defended Luke all the way through, and I remember several other posters doing the same. Perhaps you should read Luke's thread, or the defense thread during those years, or the withers thread.

Here’s a link to the traditions and rivalries the University acknowledges officially.

Spoiler: Penn State isn’t one.

To clarify, OSU has a 4-2 advantage over ND and that is incredibly huge. They are ahead of OSU in wins and winning percentage. But they haven't beaten OSU since 1936. Their first two wins over the Bucks were historically big victories.

Of course they're rivals. I can't believe that's in doubt.
