The Ohio State University - a reason or arrogance?

I've been told before that Ohio University had a lawsuit against tOSU over the trademarked word "Ohio" and thus we were forced to have THE put in front of it as in comparsion to other schools who have THE in their name but their players in the NFL and etc dont say it as such.

Arrogance? I don't see it...

I see it as confidence. My wife and I are stationed in Heidelberg, Germany and I have talked alot of college football with other people and not once has anyone said that I or other fans were arrogant. In fact alot of them respect the passion that Ohio State fans have for the school. I am friends with an Alabama fan and he loves how every Saturday my world shuts down for college football.

That lawsuit is much more recent than the use of the word 'THE' in The Ohio State University. The lawsuit did force us to make some changes where the word 'State' had to be added to some stuff, but the 'THE' has always been there.

As for the original question: Yes I am arrogant, but it has nothing to do with my attending The Ohio State University, or my love of their athletic teams.

former Buckeyes just having fun and showing the loyalty to their school, where it is emphasized endlessly that we are THE OSU.

When I went there it was drilled into us that if we use the three words "Ohio State University" then the word "The" had to be in front. Saying "Ohio State" by itself was fine. We overemphasized the word "The" more as a joke about the constant reminders we got through freshman year.

It was actually the opposite. Ohio University switched one of their logos from OU to OHIO, and Ohio state filed a complaint against Ohio University for the use of the word "OHIO" in a logo.

I always had the impression that "The" was placed thier because of so many other institutions across our nation had the initials of OSU such as oregon state and oklahoma state and many others. And i am aware of the Ohio University litagation bringing this to light a long time ago helped the matter as well. Being a long time follower of Buckeye Tradition, brings to mind the sweaters i went thru and the words of "The Ohio State University" were emblazened across in scarlet and gray. And that was way back in the 60's.

Yes its all a matter of pride to all of us to hear the pro football players say "The OhioState University as they are introduced. Its not arrogance to me, its a sign of were we hail from and damn proud of it. In the movie "Miracle" Mike Iruzione after doing about 30 gassers finally got the coaches attention and blurted out " My name is Mike Iruzione from Boston and I play for The United States of America" Thats all the coach wanted to hear and that the team was coming together as one unit. I think that as followers of Ohio State football we are all aware of this and alot of other teams would like to be like that. Oh maybe they try to imulate us or copy us but there is none other than One like Us. "The Ohio State Univesity"

I thought it all stated with a little 't' on message boards.

tOSU

And then the University added 'The' so the message boards would make sense. But perhaps I'm overstating the impact of message boards on the University. :tongue2:
