The Ohio State University - a reason or arrogance?

However once I enlisted and left home my love for the Buckeyes intensified. It wasn’t just my beloved Scarlet and Gray anymore. It was also my attachment to home. When I couldn’t get home on leave, I always had 3 months where, every Saturday I could feel like I was back home again.

Exactly! I served in the Air Force from 92-96' and was stationed at Yokota AB, Japan. I lived for Buckeye games just to see Columbus again. If blind devotion is arrogance, then hell yes we are!

Since when did being an arrogant fan become a bad thing? I always thought it was good for the rivalries.

If "The Game" is also considered arrogant then I don't know why anyone would watch sports period.

Obnoxious or rude fans are a whole different story.

However, most fans over here watch Monday Night Football and watch Mike Doss say “THE <ST1 =""><ST1 ="">Ohio</ST1><ST1 =""> State</ST1> <ST1 ="">University</ST1></ST1>” and think it is Arrogance and a condescending nature that comes across.

do a quick search. there is a thread on this board that describes the purpose of the "THE" rather well. basically it boils down to proper grammar. something i know little of otherwise id go into more detail. :p the real question you should ask your friends when they complain is why, if their college is so great, they didn't receive a proper education. if they had, they wouldn't need to ask the question "why do they say it like that?".

Are tOSU fans arrogant? Sure, they think they have the best band (and name it accordingly), fans and team. They also take pride in calling it The Ohio State University.

Does this matter? No, not really.

Do many other schools have similar arrogance about their traditions/school? Yep.

As tim said above, there is a difference between arrogance and being obnoxious about it. The latter is what people should complain about. The former only bothers you if you have your panties in a wad.

I think it's dumb that The U calls itself that, especially b/c it isn't anywhere close to the other elite schools in tradition or academic prowess. But its not why I hate Miami fans. I hate them because they are whiny little turncoats who ditch their licensed gear and stop coming to home games once their team loses a game or two.

It's not about education--that's just the official name of THE Ohio State University, as opposed to those other state universities of Ohio.

there are a lot of other schools with The in their legal name, they just chose not to make it the focal point of their marketing.

Besides Penn State and The Citadel, which ones? I searched this list state-by-state, and really the only other "The" schools besides tOSU were specialized institutions, like The Baptist College of Florida (okay, and The College of New Jersey).

My understanding has always been that OSU is pretty unique in its official emphasis on the "The", and that we did it for Ohio-specific political reasons (not marketing).

The fastest and easiest way to be labeled an arrogant fan is to cheer for a winning team. Especially a team that wins a championship that they weren't expected to win.

Being called arrogant and being arrogant are different things.

Every team has fans who are truly arrogant. It comes from basing too much of your self-image and self-esteem on the accomplishments of 20-year-olds. For those of you in your teens, that might not sound bad; but trust us. To those of us with families and careers and real-life problems and responsibilities, basing self-image and self-esteem on the result of a game played by people half your age sounds like the most ridiculous thing in the world.

This is one of many things I find amusing about Tallahassee. Huge numbers of people are utterly dependent on the Semen-Holes for their self-esteem, even people my age. They were moaning about FSU not winning another game, not just this season but EVER, after the loss to Virginia. This kind of desperation results from the same thing that caused their arrogance as recently as last week.

So does THE Ohio State University have a few fans that choose to ride the roller-coaster of arrogance and suicidal depression? Sure, so does everybody. We just have more of them because we have SO MANY fans and we win SO MANY games, and that bothers people who are on the roller-coaster for another team.

I had an interesting experience in Clearwater Florida this weekend. I was down there for a bachelor party and we found a nice sportsbar to take in the buckeyes game. Of all the games that were on that day, the Ohio State game was the one with the sound turned on. There were probably 25 people watching the bucks. There was an arrogant seminole fan giving us a hard time the entire game. All he kept talking about was "florida speed" (if you can imagine that. The funny thing about this seminole fan is that he happened to be wearing a white, orange, and blue shirt. I asked him if he was such a big seminole fan, why was he wearing gator colors. He said that he just likes that shirt. One thing I know for sure, a buckeye fan would never accidentally show up to watch a Buckeyes game wearing maize and blue. end of story.

I think we have a better excuse to use 'The' than other schools, however I think the added emphasis put on it is a mixture of fun for players and for marketing.

I was under the impression that multiple other big schools, like The University of Texas, had The before their name. I could be mistaken.

The issue at hand in this thread is only that: former Buckeyes just having fun and showing the loyalty to their school, where it is emphasized endlessly that we are THE OSU.

PS: I think you are right that Texas is another "the" school.
