The Ohio State Baseball (Official Thread)

Don't get me wrong. I think it will be an improvement. I'm just realistic that we're never going to be competitive in baseball on a national level. Here's what I think are realistic goals for the program.

Compete for a B1G title more often than not
Make the NCAA regionals 4-5 times per decade.
Make a Super regional once per decade.

Anything beyond that is gravy.

When you think of Ohio State, you don’t necessarily think of dominant baseball teams. But that doesn’t mean there haven’t been some pretty memorable years in the history of the Buckeye baseball program.

In the 90s and early 2000s, OSU baseball was the dominant program in the Big Ten, but since then, it’s been a rather hit-and-miss affair. The program can still boast a conference tournament championship every few years, but it’s been a long, long time since Ohio State has been relevant on a national scale.

But there was a period time when it was. In fact, the Buckeyes have made several College World Series appearances, and even have a national title to brag about.

Can't say I'm too enthusiastic about this hire, even though I'm sure he's a baseball genius. No experience in the Midwest, much less Ohio? I would doubt he ever even thought of Ohio State baseball before a few weeks ago and why would he? I just think he has a huge learning curve to figure out how to win here and sell Ohio State.

Good luck to this guy and I wish him the best, I just fear we will be in this same spot a few years from now...

First Words With Mosiello…The Buckeyes ‘Get Their Man’

Mosiello_interior0616.jpg

When he called from Fort Worth Thursday afternoon it was obvious that new Buckeyes baseball coach Bill Mosiello (pronounced Mo-zee-ello) had done a lot of talking since agreeing to terms with Ohio State the day before.

There was more than the usual coaching rasp in his voice. At times he was hard to hear. The previous twenty four hours had been exciting – taxing.

“I’m excited to be the coach of Ohio State baseball,” he said. “I grew up in southern California, Orange County, but I guess you could say Ohio State has always been a team I followed.

“They were my football team when I grew up – Art Schlichter and Jim Karsatos. My favorite teams were always something out of the ordinary. It was not the Dodgers, the Reds were my team back then – George Foster, Pete Rose, Ray Knight and Johnny Bench. I followed the Big Red Machine for a lot of years.”

The search, in the words of Associate Athletic Director Shaun Richard, was diligent following the dismissal of Greg Beals as head coach on May 23 – a whirlwind three weeks of suggestions, fact checking, phone calls, and those fortunate to actually interview. In the end, Richard declares…”we got our man”.

“At the end of the day Bill was our guy,” said Richard by phone earlier today. “We were excited about his enthusiasm, and the passion he’s going to bring to this program. I talked to a ton of people through this process…and Bill [Mosiello] is our guy. Everybody and their brother knows somebody who knows somebody who’s a coach that would be perfect for the job, and I tried to talk to almost every single person. There were people who probably were good fits for this program. But at the end of the day…Bill’s our guy.

It would be interesting to know if he was actually Ohio State's 1st choice. Regardless, I'm sure he can coach, so it will all come down to "can he recruit at Ohio State?"

'You're buying this dream': Bill Mosiello sells new era of Ohio State baseball

Bill Mosiello’s resume fills the walls of his office at Bill Davis Stadium.

The new Ohio State baseball coach is still moving in, sitting behind a desk of papers and notebooks and a pencil holder of a “Mosiello” baseball jersey made by one of his sons when he was much younger.

Mosiello’s past hangs above the door to the conference room: jerseys from previous stops as an assistant coach at TCU and with USA Baseball. But his credibility is what’s behind his desk. To his right hang Mike Trout and Todd Helton jerseys, to his left, pictures with Trout and numerous other players he’s coached.

Mosiello is the first to admit that none of the more than 90 Major League Baseball players he’s coached made it to the big leagues because of him. But he knows how they act. He knows what they look like, and he knows what his players can emulate.

That’s his selling point. It’s why Mosiello is at Ohio State in the first place, seeing potential from afar. He knows the power of the Buckeyes brand and how it could lead to the same consistent greatness he’s seen in his past that his current program has never seen before.

First time on this section since the 'Fire Beal' days. Seems like he's settling in, hard to tell since tOSU is in 'football season' and the other sports are diminished somewhat. Like getting two recruits, but how many do we need? Mining Ahia is critical, and dipping into Cali or the South is important as well. Getting the warm weather guys up north would be nice. Heck, I'd settle for four pitchers that have 1.18 ERAs each. Agree with Ord that tOSU will not be a national contender annually, but hopefully we can muster enough talent to compete for a B10 championship and a spot in the playoffs every other year.
