The Official Support for Coach Tressel Thread

Recently, it has been reported that Coach Tressel has been receiving what amounts to "hate mail" from people who are allegedly fans of Ohio State football. Of course, we at BuckeyePlanet do not consider such people to be true fans, and we do not believe that they are representative members of the Buckeye fan base.

This thread is your opportunity to express your support for Jim Tressel, and to thank him for what he has accomplished at Ohio State and for the direction that he is taking "our" program. We will send Coach Tressel an email with excerpts from this thread, so that he knows that he at least enjoys support from the members of our website.

Of course, no coach is perfect, and I'm relatively certain that every fan can find some faults with Coach Tressel. And while we have several threads to discuss those faults, this is not the place to do so. Therefore, any derogatory or bashing posts will be deleted. Be as detailed or as brief as you like, but don't be negative!

To Our Coach, Teacher, and CareGiver

Coach, my daughter will be a frosh at OSU next week and although she is not a football fan, I bought her season tickets and told her to enjoy the tradition, pagentry, and atmosphere of the game in addition to making new friends and acquaintances.
I have encouraged her to read the 'Winners Game of Life' which I believe she will after being a Buckeye is engrained in her.
I thank you for what you do for youngsters' maturity, caring, academics, and family.
I am a sucker for Ohio traditions and I have followed the Tressel lineage and contributions to Ohio and our people (although I currently live in Illinois - please beat U of I!).
God be with you.

Coach Tressel, I'm sure you've learned to take the crtiticism of the legion of 'armchair coaches' with more than a grain of salt. Please continue to do so. I'm extraordinarily proud of the direction you've taken the Ohio State football program and look forward to many years of continued success and pride in our student athletes. Thanks for all you do and Go Bucks!

I love Ohio State football. Sometimes I joke about how it is the most important thing in my life and should be the most important thing in any person's life. While that overstates the issue, of course, there is a kernel of truth to it. Ohio State football means something to me. I care.

Truth is, as you probably know, that's exactly why you get fired up e-mails calling for new Coordinators and questioning your ability to "get it done" in the big game. Ohio State fans actually care about Ohio State football, and that is to be encouraged. But, there is also a line.

As I said, I love Ohio State football. I think football itself is the greatest of all man made games, and that Ohio State is the most important of all the teams which play it (save for whatever team my own son happens to be on in little league). But, it is a game. It is a game which brings me JOY.

It took me a while to realize that. In 1998, after Ohio State lost to Michigan State, I finally determined "I can't do this any more." What did I mean? I can't love Ohio State football any more? No. I meant, I can no longer have the outcome of a football game control the remainder of my weekend. I was not a nice guy to be around on days following losses, and finally it occurred to me just how ridiculous that is. Why do I watch Ohio State football? I watch it because it brings me joy and pleasure. If I cannot handle the pain of a loss, then I need to stop watching it altogether. Because letting the success or failure of 18 - 22 year old young men playing a game control whether my wife wants to be near me the next day is beyond absurd.

Don't get me wrong Coach, I still care very deeply about Ohio State football, and I would still prefer perfect seasons and National Championships. When Ohio State looses, I still allow it to effect me emotionally, because I care. But, I now have perspective, I guess, because I'm able to digest a loss and move on to the next time I get to see my Buckeyes playing again. Because Ohio State football brings me joy. And I finally understand that having that joy comes with the all but certain risk that there will be losses along the way.

Like a lot of people, I sit on my lazy boy and think I've got all the answers when I'm watching a game. I see Sanzo virtually uncovered in the slot all game and I wonder, why aren't we just throwing him the football on a 1 step drop? They're saying "Here, have 7 yards" and we're not taking it. I think it is my right, or is otherwise "fair," for me as a fan who cares to have these questions. But, I also realize there's a reason I'm sitting in my lazy boy and you're walking the side-lines. If I can see it, I'm pretty sure YOU can see it.

You haven't won some 80% of the time you've stepped on the field because you're lucky or are simply stumbling in to wins despite yourself. You have a philosophy - a system - that you believe in and it works. You can point to how it works in all those wins on your resume, and in all those Championships. When it stops working consistently, I reserve the right to call for change. But, until that time, it will continue to be my assumption that you know what you're doing out there.

Thank you, Jim Tressel, for giving me the chance to watch my Buckeyes compete on the biggest stages, at the highest levels. Yes, I would have much preferred to have beaten Florida and LSU and Texas and Penn State and USC. But, I'm not fool enough to think you wouldn't have also preferred the same. I can remember a time when Ohio State was a Big Ten also ran and it was Michigan's league each year. I can recall losing to teams who have a long history of being at or near the bottom of the standings. I can remember being happy the Buckeyes were back in the top 25, finally. And I find it ridiculous to complain about a coach who has established Ohio State as a serious contender for the National Championships every season.

Yes. Thank you, Jim Tressel. For winning games. For getting Ohio State to the level where we even have the chance to lose games that matter as much as the USC game did, or the title games did. But, most of all, Coach, Thanks for having thick skin and putting up with the "lunatic fringe" who are never satisfied with anything short of 13-0 seasons and average scores of 45-3.

Coach,

You've come under fire lately, and several times throughout your tenure here because our teams don't win with enough razzle-dazzle. Your conservative play-calling has been questioned time and time again. The same critics turn around and criticize your gutsy play-calls. As fans, it may seem like we're never happy. What I see, however, is a coach determined to not only win but to win with class. The vast majority of the Buckeye nation are thrilled with the job you have done. You came in this program with bold promises and didn't disappoint. You told us we'd be proud of our boys, and we have been. You came in here with the audacity to hold players accountable for their behavior and commitment to the team. We have had an opportunity to see who you are Coach, and I'm here to tell you we couldn't do better. We are lucky to have someone that understands the tradition and pageantry as you do. We are lucky to have someone that shares our philosophy and has similar visions for our program. On and off of the field you can't be expected to always make the right call, but we still support you. I will continue to stand behind the man that has shown "What It Means To Be A Buckeye!"

Sincerely,

Thankful in Troy

Coach Tressel is the best thing to happen to Ohio State football in the past 30 yrs!! He is not only a winner on the field, he is a true model and mentor off the field. He brings much more to The Ohio State University than Big Ten Championships and National Championships. He brings class, integrity and honor. I would want no other person coaching our football team, than Jim Tressel.

Thank you, Coach, for all you've done and will continue to do, to make us proud to call the Buckeye's our team.

GO BUCKS!!

I just wanted to say I posted on this thread -- because I support our coaches unconditionally.

Trust the coaches. In Tressel we trust.

I think we all Trust Coach Tressel as a majority, there is no doubt about that. This weeks past media lunch presser had to make me laugh. We witnessed another side of Coach T that we didn't see. He made some
slight backhanded apology about some Buckeye fans are whiners. He made the comment that alot of Buckeye fans are the most unhappy people in the world. He said "I hate to be part of making someone less happy. I mean they're already miserable and to make them less happy, well I feel bad. I thought that was funny.

Coach continue the fine work you are doing with those young men. I see how much they all care for you and it saddens the whole buckeye family(players, coaches, and fans) to lose. I would not want my children to play for any other country. But that probably won't happen since I only have 2 girls. Do not let a few angered fans get to you. Most of them have probably never played organized football at all. The Buckeye nation is behind you. We win together and lose together!
