The Official Support for Coach Tressel Thread

I hope the mods don't mind me bumping this thread from page 8, but it deserves to be revisited with the benefit of hindsight.

Thank you, Coach Tressel, for not listening to all the Debbie Downers of our fan base and just doing your thing. Thanks for continuing to believe in TP and develop him when the peanut gallery were clamoring for him to be benched or moved to WR.

Thank you for a thrilling, amazing, exciting, electrifying game on Saturday against Iowa. We wouldn't have had it any other way. You can wear the moniker "Field Goal Jim" with pride. Pat Forde was right: the Vest knew best, and you did it your way.

Thank you for yet another Conference Championship. Thank you for taking us to the Rose Bowl.

Thank you for adjusting the offense when you did, and taking us to that sweet victory at Penn State.

One more thing: :scum4:

TP and some of the players really wanted to go for it on 4th down and a half a yard, with the ball on our own 29 yd. line. Tress made the right call. See Patriots vs Colts game. A similar outcome could have occured if we didn't get the first down.

In Tress We Trust!!

I haven't posted in this thread until now, and I'll just say this:

Head Coaches from any Big Ten school with 5 straight titles, in over 100 years of Big Ten football:

Woody Hayes - 6 straight from 1972-'77
Jim Tressel - 5 straight from 2005-'09

/end of list.

I'll add..."traditional powerhouse" programs you could be a fan of instead, staring down the barrel:

Michigan
Notre Dame
Tennessee
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Florida State
Texas A&M
Arkansas
UCLA

Instead of worrying about having relevance, bowl eligibility, recruiting violations, embarassing coaches, 4 win seasons, or even mattering to anyone...

We're thinking about which BCS game we're going to, how many of our guys are doing well in the NFL, how much above 70% our graduation rate will be, and we're worried about...uh, losing to top 5 teams, with a loss to a bottom feeder every 5-8 years or so. Ummmm...if you can't live with that, GTFOOH.

Ohio State beat Michigan 21-10 on Saturday, and heaven help the Ohio State video people who try to splice together a highlight reel of more than a few plays. Ohio State won this game because that's what Ohio State does. It wins games. But it doesn't translate to highlight reels. I get the feeling Ohio State coach Jim Tressel doesn't care. In fact, that's more than a feeling. I know he doesn't care. For kicks, I'm going to write the words "Jim Tressel" and "style points" in the same sentence, just to do something that has never been done before.

Don't take this as a blast at Tressel, either. I've been there, and I've done that, and it just doesn't matter. It doesn't do any good, or any harm, or anything at all. The man is impervious. He's stubborn. He coaches his way, and most of the time when the game is over, his way has produced more points than the other team's way.
Dear Gregg:

Thanks for another excellent article. I live to read them.

I'm sure that you get a lot of posts from fans who think you are arrogant to express such opinions. Why would one of America's most successful college coaches take the opinions of a "sports writer" seriously? After all, it's not like you haven't been so totally off the mark in so much of what you predicted for the year.

I mean, really. What's up with these fans? They are the arrogant ones! Don't they realize that it isn't that your judgment that was wrong. It's the teams that let you down by not living up to the potential that your keen eye saw.

It must be so difficult for you. Who do these fans think that they are to suggest that Coach Tressel doesn't read your columns? Of course, he does! Your columns are a bible for any college coach.

Tressel really is stubborn, isn't he? After reading your column, he probably took all the flashy plays out of the game plan just to be difficult. I hear he's like that. He needs to realize how blessed he is by your taking an interest in his program and offering such sage advice.

And what about these poor guys who had to put together a highlight reel? Try the 29 yard touchdown run and the preceding run by Pryor. TSUN's defense thought they were pretty impressive, but what do they know? Slow Big Ten mentality. How about the tackle in the end zone on TSUN's first possession or the many interceptions? Oh, then there is that small matter of the hit on Stonum by Sabino. You're right, "move along folks, nothing to see here!"

We Ohio State fans are mad as hell about how Tressel beats TSUN. Sure, we love hard-hitting defense. Who cares whether Ohio State's offense is ready to stretch the field vertically or whether Pryor played with two turf toes and a gimpy ankle.

I remember what you said earlier this year, and you're right. RichRod is playing with freshmen and sophomores and they make a great leap between those years and their junior and senior years. Michigan is back!

But, that's no excuse for Tressel treating Pryor like a sophomore and a work in progress. You're right. It would have been so much more exciting if we had opened up the offense and taken lots of chances so that The Game would have been "more exciting".

Tressel just doesn't seem to get that and we're all the poorer because his stubbornness keeps him from following your advice.

Who cares is this was a rebuilding year? That is just an excuse for not winning the national championship. Who cares if Ohio State was playing better football at the end of the year than other teams that are rebuilding, such as USC, TSUN, LSU, and some other big name programs?

Whether Ohio State wins its bowl game or not, they will come back loaded for next year. Only you can save us. Please take time from your busy schedule to write Tressel privately and offer your sage advice. Maybe if you do it quietly, he won't be so stubborn.

He needs you. We need you. Please, as someone who has printed every one of your columns and pasted them to the walls of my house, I beg you. Please don't fail us in our hour of need!

We're sure that Coach Tressel will breathlessly await your "learned" opinions. Please don't hold back, we'd really like Ohio State to win a national championship.

Our lives are in your hands.
