The Official Support for Coach Tressel Thread

I can't believe it has come to making a thread to support coach Tressel. The things he has done for the University, the football program and these kids lives should not be thrown out the door because we've struggled winning in big games. The last time I checked it wasn't the easiest thing to beat a top 5 team. Those of you who don't support him make me sick that all care you about is football. He's brought so much to this program and lets not forget he did win us a championship.

Coach Tressel you will always have my full support. :oh:

Coach Tress, you brought class back the the program. You are not only a great man, but, a great coach. Your first speech about being "proud of our young people in the classroom, in the community, and most especially in 310 days in Ann Arbor Michigan" was dead on. It still gives me chills. You know as well as anyone that there is a small group of irrational, reactionary fans in any fan base. Don't let these people get to you because none of them could do the the fine job you do any justice. I want to thank you for giving us more great memories this decade than I could have imagined. Go Bucks!

Coach Tressel,
As an alumnus I am proud to have a man of your character and integrity as the "face of the franchise", so to speak. Your respect for the honor and traditions built by those who came before you, your overall success on the field, and your commitment to running a clean program despite all of the temptations that exist for players and coaches today, place you among the elites of your profession.

Go Bucks!

I was a junior at Ohio state in 1968 when they won the National Championship. It was 34 years before we claimed another National Championship. I can't even remember all the agonizing defeats in those 34 years; but there were many. Jim Tressel comes in in 2001 and wins a National Championship in his second year. He has won the Big 10 (2 outright and 2 tied) the last 4 years. He must be doing something right.

I posted this in another thread but wanted to copy it here:

Can anyone name 5 programs that have been better the last 3 years? How about 5 years? How about 10 years?

Can we as a fanbase really be upset that we may be the 4th or 5th best program right now instead of #1? Especially when OSU pretty much has everything in place to become the #1 over the next few years? This may arguably be one of the best 5-10 year spans of OSU football. You definitely have to go back to the Woody era to even have the discussion. Losing all of these games to top 5 teams sucks but come on... lets keep things in perspective.

I'm just thinking out loud now, what programs may have been consitently better than OSU the last 3, 5 or 10 years.

Florida
USC
Texas
Oklahoma

Are any others even remotely close???

All of that is just the on-the-field type of stuff. As a lot of others have mentioned, Tressel's off-the-field things he does is probably top 5 in the nation too.

Every great coach has a facet that fans can point at - Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden not winning championships despite dominating teams, Cooper not being able to win Bowl Games and beat Michigan, Stoops' latest bowl game losing streak, etc, etc.
Fact is all our "fans" can point to is the recent "big game" losing streak. Remember not too long ago when you had a winning streak on those same games?

This too shall pass.

Go Bucks and Go Tress!

I agree with the earlier points. JT is by no means a perfect coach, but then again such a person does not exist. That being said he's the perfect coach for OSU. People should not lose sight of all that he has brought to the OSU football program. He has owned Michigan (causing the demise of Carr), he has owned the Big Ten, and he has took us to 3 title games (winning 1 of them, against one of the best college football teams in the past two decades). He has been on the wrong side of some huge games as of late. The last 3 losses have been to Penn St., Texas, and USC. All have been by less than a touchdown. This team is on the cusp of being back at the top. People shouldn't forget that we have a very youthful squad. I guess Tressel is a victim of his own success in a lot of ways.

I guess I will echo bkb. I love Ohio State. In every season of my life, the University has played a formative role. As a child, Ohio State faculty taught me about astronomy, computers, and psychology. Football and basketball taught me about hard work and competing fairly. I came to associate Ohio State with all good things.

As a young man, I attended Ohio State and was fortunate to learn from some of the world's leaders in their fields. When I decided to enter academia, an Ohio State professor served as my mentor.

Ohio State continues to play a role in my life, although I have almost no contact with the University. The lessons I learned there pass on to my students and in my research.

I learned long ago to keep college football in perspective in my life, but that does not mean that Ohio State football doesn't mean something very important to me. After all these years, Ohio State and Ohio State football remain a part of my identity and culture.

I doubt that Jim Tressel ever reads message boards. If I thought he did, I'd tell him how pleased I am that Jim Tressel is the Head Coach for Ohio State football. I'd congratulate him for his success in teaching more than winning ways for football, for teaching values that help these young men become successful people in life in all of their fields of endeavor.

The University and all of its supporters are very lucky to have him.

Coach my father-in-law was a stalwart for your dad's B-W teams in the early-mid 60s, and I have to say what an honor it is for him and for me to have you, Lee's son (sorry, bet you haven't heard that for a while ), running the program at my beloved alma mater. Year in and year out we have a quality team on the field (something no other Big Ten school has been able to say over the past decade) and quality people representing the university, as I try to be when I represent the university in my profession. There will always be people with unrealistic expectations, but for those of us grounded in the real world, who can see a modicum of a big picture, who look at the quality of our program through a more complete and more civilized lens, we are very happy you are our coach.

Oh, and the 7 wins over Michigan, the national title, and the 3 trips to the BCS title game don't hurt, either :wink2:

Jim Tressel. The name means so much for so many. For the players, it means Coach. Mentor. Leader. For the fans it means Class. Excellence. Pride. All of these things are what make up Buckeye Tradition. And Tressel is all of these things multiplied exponentially. He is the face of everything The Ohio State University stands for. He represents more than just a football program or a group of kids on a football team. He brings out the best in everyone around him, that is simply his nature.

When JT came to tOSU in 2001, the speech that he gave to open his coaching career here sent chills down the spine of every single person listening. Beat Michigan. That was the ultimate goal. Who could have guessed that just a short season later our Bucks would be walking away with a National Championship. The determination of Coach Tressel and his players that year demonstrated the true elite caliber quality that tOSU produces and harbors on a consistent basis. Every year of his career here at tOSU, JT has succeeded in bringing home a plethora of victories. He has not commanded one losing season at the reins. This is truly excellence.

Let us not forget those seasons under the direction of John Cooper. Sure we would win the bowl games most of the time, but how many losses occurred during the seasons? Just exactly what bowl games were our boys playing in? Definitely nothing in a large national spotlight like a BCS game. Out of his 8 seasons completed at tOSU, 6 of those were BCS games and 3 of those were National Championship games. That is an extremely good track record regardless of what it is compared to, and any Coach would be thrilled to hold that record. The fans of that coach?s team should be even more ecstatic, considering that their pride is competitive enough to make it to the elite games year in and year out. This all was made possible by one main force: Jim Tressel.

It would take an extremely 'fair-weather' fan to criticize the excellence that the vest has presented to the nation here. It may be confusing and frustrating to look at the big time game record. It is never about those games. Sure it would be nice to win them, but the ride leading all the way up to these games is always exciting and eventful. And after the games are over, somehow tOSU still seems to turn out excellent numbers to the NFL in the draft each and every year. This could not happen without a coach that excels at what he does. JT not only forms and shapes football players, he molds the boys that come to his program into young men. He makes them an integral part of society and gives them the tools to succeed on and off the football field. That is what he is all about, and it screams class and excellence. He truly is one of the greatest coaches to ever lead this team and his name will forever ring out in tOSU football lore. Simply put, Jim Tressel is a great human being and I am damn proud to have him on my side. GO BUCKS!

Integrity, fidelity, and grace. The three most important qualities a leader can have IMO. Tressel has them in spades.

If you think about our fight song, winning is mentioned but the most important part comes at the end:

"Our honor defend, we will fight to the end for O-HI-O."

Coach Tressel, thank you for defending the honor of this great team, university, state, and country!

Coach Tressel;

I wasn't born a buckeye. I wasn't even born an American. As a matter of fact I was born a refugee; no country wanted to harbor my family.

My route to Columbus was very convoluted, tiring, and desperate. It involved a stop in Dallas, where I learned the value of college football to the everyday man's life. Then I arrived in Columbus, and saw an ever deeper passion for the team. Ohio State was Ohio, and Ohio was Ohio State. I arrived here in the Cooper years, and saw the greats of Eddie George and Hoying and Glenn and Winfield, etc etc.

However, it wasn't until your speech to a huddled arena where I fell in love with this school. You spoke of the same things that had my parents traveling across the world to show me. Loyalty, education, honesty, pride in the community, love. From that moment I knew that I was hearing the words of a great man, and an inspiration in my life. And then you're trip to visit the soldiers abroad bridged the gap for me. Buckeye, American, and at home.

Who would've thought it? That I would have forged such a connection with you. You, born and raised in Ohio. And me, born in one of the most desolate places in Africa. But that's exactly what happened. My father and I watched your speech, and from then on we fell in love with the teachings and the values that give to the young men that attend your program.

From then on I knew my choice for university, I knew where my heart was set. Ohio State. To hear that there are fans that are trying to embattle you angers me. Do they not know how rare it is to have a true father figure as the head of your program? Someone who will be there for the players through whatever their lives take them?

Well I, as well as many of the others here at BuckeyePlanet, know how much you mean to this program. For me, Ohio State without Jim Tressel is just not the same. I am rooting for you, and I know that the University understands your value. Stay here forever, Jim!

Go Bucks!
