The Official Offense Discussion (Merged)

The QB grading has to include decision making. I'm sure a big part of the reason that Troy didn't rate a winning performance last Saturday was his poor decision-making on some third down plays.

It's one thing to take off after a couple seconds on 1st and 10. It's entirely different to take off on 3rd and 10 and 3rd and 15 when there isn't a wide-open field in front of you.

smith's biggest problem is he is being encouranged to run. a qb should run only when a play fails. so we are essentially expecting smith to fail and grading him in a manner that literally forces him to do so in order for a performance to grade well... thats 100% counter productive. i truely hope that isn't true because if it is my respect for jt will have taken a hit.

Jim Tressel's Playcalling

Are we lacking in this area? Even in our wins I've been finding myself scratching my head (in some cases screaming) about the some of calls that are made on offense. My anger is quickly tempered by the fact that there's a lot more to a football game than what you see and that some calls are made because of personnel or match-up concerns. How do you rate JT's playcalling?

Mike Martz's offense, considered one of the most prolific in NFL history, is -64 in turnovers since he has taken over.
The number really took a hit last season when StL was -24 on turnover margin (22 INTs and 17 fumbles).

OSU's figures under JT are really out of whack, because the team has gotten worse in every successive season despite the fact that anyone with an inkling of what JT expects from the team knows that the TO margin is significant. The fumbling problems with Lydell, Branden and Troy the last two seasons have been exacerbated by the defenses inability to create turnovers.

YEAR GTOTAL LTOTAL MARGIN RANK
2001 29 18 +11 10(T)
2002 30 17 +13 18
2003 25 24 +1 58(T)
2004 19 23 -4 85(T)
2005 9 15 -6 101(T)

It seems to me that the greatest weakness of JT's playcalling is the rhythm. There just doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it. In the 90's, our Offense was pretty good. You could sit in the stadium and see the plays setting each other up. Play A would set up Play B. Play B would set up Play C. and so forth. JT calls plays based on "what plays are sucessful from a particular down and distance". For Example: We may have suceess in the "spread" from 2nd and 4. Or the "I" from 1st and 10. There's no rhythym. The spread play doesn't set up the I-formation.
This type of philosophy will allow opposing head coaches to scout our offfense, thus making it more "predictable". The longer he has been in D-1, the worse our Offense has looked. Maybe because there is enough film on his tendencies that he has become predictable. Opposing coaches can watch the same film JT watches and discover what plays we are good at and predict when we will run those plays in certain situations.
Players must execute. Coaches must coach. We can (and probably will) debate the problems with the offense until our fingers hurt. This just my two cents.

Every team and every offense has tendencies...every team and every coach has a staff that charts down/distance, hash, wide/short, strong/weak, etc.

Tendencies are not the issue imho...and rhythm stems from execution. When the OL is rolling and the backs are running hard, there is a definite rhythm to the playcalling. Now, when a first down play is stuffed for no gain or is incomplete, it is difficult to have a rythm in such a situation.

-40 is not much better...but I understand your point. However, your stats are part of my point, it isn't the playcalling or philosophy hurting, it is the ridiculous and uncharacteristic mistakes.

how can something be dubed uncharacteristic when it has been going on for 2+ years? isn't there a point where it stops being a coincidence and starts becoming a pattern?
