The Official Offense Discussion (Merged)

If you notice we don't use that much trickery on defense..we line up in the base defense a lot. We let our physical talent shine through, Whether it be Carp rushing from end, blitzing safeties like Doss and Whitner. Our defense attacks more than it reads and reacts. We play attacking assignment football. Why does our offense have to be read and react. If a team is weak at corner attack the corners..if it has trouble stopping the run..run the ball.If your QB is having trouble making his reads..simplify it ..give him either or choices.

Agree. This program should be able to dictate what a defense will have to do...not vice versa. This staff has proven that they can make gametime adjustments when needed...now there must be a confidence in that ability.

exactly. is osu a power i formation team, or a spread team? they don't even know. osu needs to simply say, this is what we're going to try and do, now come and stop us. you then adjust from there.

to me, it seems like osu's strategy has been to look at what the opposition likes to do on defense, and try to scheme an offense around it for that week.

What is particularly amazing is how consistent the defense has been given that they've gone through as many coordinators and assistants as the offense has had personalities.

Well, there was drop-off in sheer agressiveness last year, which was directly a result of going away from what the style best suited to a speed + strength defense - itself a shift in style due to DC changes.
This year they are back to fast, aggressive, disciplined defense - and I'm all for that. Its the scheme into which the kids were recruited.

And talking of recruiting, you surely have to have a defined style in mind when assessing future prospects. (Well unless you want to go as the Patriots seem to go, players that can adapt to a variety of roles. But I think that's putting too much of an onus on the players to execute, let alone the coaching staff to convey what they want done).

it seems a bit of a risk since OSU's O seems so dependant on developing a rythm over the course of games before it approaches "well oiled" (ie end of last year)
You see, it goes back to what I was saying earlier about the fumbling problem. A lot of great teams might run 70 or 80 offensive plays, where as we run 30. So really, our offense needs three games to everybody elses' one to get the same number of game-speed reps. That's why we're rolling by Game 8 or 9 of the season ... that's almost two whole games worth of offensive snaps, plus we'll have a 1st year 'veteran punter' for the 4th season in a row, and we all know the punt is the most important play in football anyway.

It's just JT's master plan to get the ball into the hands of his playmakers!

Aha! Tressel has figured out that if he can deceive his own offense, then there is no way that the opposition will figure out what he is scheming.

Congratulations.

Talk is cheap, unfortunately hope springs eternal and Bucks fans will continue to drink the Kool-Aid for the indefinite future, somehow mind-f***ing themselves into believing it is 2002 again.

The fact is we are an offensive bottom feeder in the Big Ten Conference, let alone the nation, and this will have a negative impact on the program moving forward.

The thing about the spread is that the QB and WRs must be on the same page as far as reads go. Routes and reads change according to coverage and a pre-snap read may not be the actual play read. A spread QB must be able to audible with frequency and with confidence.

Byrnes HS (SC) is the best HS offense I have ever seen...it is all 4 and 5 WR sets. The QB audibles on 75% of the sideline playcalls. Coach Bentley is fine with the audibles because he has absolute confidence in the QBs knowing his system.

That type of confidence and intricate knowledge of the offense is crucial. Anything less results in mediocrity or even failure.

sounds exactly like kenton when ben mauk was there.

I'm convinced that with the support of loyal, insightful fans like yourself, things will only get better in the future.

I agree, but it is the overwhelming volume of loyal, uninsightful fans that will cause deficiencies to be stretched out further into the future and have a damaging impact upon the long-term success of the program.
