The Moment you Realized Time was Catching You... (Merged)

Age 40.
I work out just as much but do not have the muscle size or tone I used to have. I cannot drop 10 pounds as easy either. My joints are killing me.

I used to be able to work sun up to sun down but those days are long gone.

21, your days of an option QB may be over.

Buy a bottle of Hair color for men, get your ass off the couch and into the gym, and take some vitamins. Bunch of sissies!!!

Seriously though, I noticed when even though my eating habits hadn't changed and I was always altering my workout for maximum benefits I was still fighting gravity and the horizon. Its a battle everyday to keep all the parts from going down and out.

A few years ago I was running around a soccer field with a bunch of 6th graders I was coaching. I could keep up with them, but I stepped into a hole in the middle of the field and badly sprained my ankle.

Being macho/stupid, I refused to go to any treatment center, and just limped around for about a month.

Everything still heals, but it takes longer.

I don't think I've realized it yet, at least physically. At 28, I should be in prime physical condition. Should be. Anyways, for me, like PrincessPeach, it's watching my parents go downhill. My mother died at 55 last year, and my 55 year old dad was diagnosed last month with cancer and is currently in chemo. All of the sudden I'm taking care of him, and have taken over as "patriarch" of my family. It's not so much watching my dad's health decline (he's actually doing very well, so far), it's the fact that I am wearing his shoes (so to speak) now, and doing for my family what he used to.

I've noticed it in the last couple of years. Its seems like any athletic activity I perform I get these nagging little injuries:

cardio-kickboxing = injured rotator cuff
intramural softball = back pain from swinging bat
running = shin splints

So frustrating. I never used to get injured! Hell, even when I throw the tennis ball for my dog I get a pain in my collarbone. (Maybe I shouldn't try to throw the ball 300 yards every time!)

Also, the kid I used to babysit (he was 3 at the time) is now a junior in high school. That really hit me hard!

Several contributing factors:

  • A few years ago while in Columbus for an OSU football game, my buddy and I decided to check out some of the bars we used to hit on High St. After maybe 30 minutes at Papa Joe's, I was tired of the crowd, the noise, the mess, and the "young punks" running around.
  • Two years ago I joined a softball team at work after not playing for a year or so. After the first day of practice, I felt like a 90-year old man- everything hurt and it was hard to get out of bed, out of a chair, out of the car, etc...
  • This summer was my 20 year high school reunion....
