The Greatest "Drive" since.......

WoodyWorshiper

THINK, Before You Speak
Former College Pick'Em Champ
Where would you rank the Buckeyes winning drive yesterday in the history of TOSU football? I only go back about 35 years, but the ones that really stick in my mind are:
1979 Art Schlichter vs. UCLA
1997 Joe Germaine Rose Bowl

Those being mentioned, I'd have to put yesterday's drive right up there with those two, especially since it was in "The Game." Troy Smith showed exceptional poise and leadership yesterday in the fourth quarter. It was easily the "best 15 minutes" he's ever played here, and possibly the "best 15 minutes" ANY player has ever played here. Thoughts?

I'm too young to vote on such things, but what made it truly remarkable was that it was two classic comeback drives in a row. From what I've read on the scout boards, all michigan fans knew the outcome once Troy took over at the 12 for the second drive.

Yeah, the Rose Bowl drive was amazing. Also the drive against Michigan in 2002 to go up 14-9 was pretty special. And how about the game winning drive against Purdue that year? Also...the drive against Penn State in 2003 was pretty amazing too. But this was Michigan...and we were down by 2 scores. And we came back...and won, at their place. That just doesn't happen. Jim Tressel is taking Ohio State football to a new level. If Tressel has brought this many GOOD MEMORIES in just 5 years...i can't wait to see what comes.

I hope EVERYONE remembers what he's done...and how good this feels right now. Because times can't always be good, no matter how great a coach is. I love Tressel...and I have a feeling I always will. I really think we have the best coach in college football...and i'm very very greatful.

Dubs, I didn't get to see that UCLA drive as I was in Japan and they didn't satellite broadcast games then, but I remember the Rose Bowl drive against ASU. For a single, totally crucial drive, that would be the best. However, for "comebacks" in big games, Troy's would have to trump even that.

Troy may be hot and cold over a season, but I tell you all what, I'll take him being red hot against Michigan every single time...

Dubs, the one I thought of, since it was also in AA, was the 80-yarder that Corny Greene led in 1975. The #1 ranked Bucks were down 14-7, and it was getting late in the 4th quarter. We tied the game on a 4th and goal 1-yard plunge by Pete Johnson with under 4 minutes left; and soon thereafter Ray Griffin (Archie's brother) picked off a scUM pass and returned it to the 3-yard line. Pete scored another TD to give us the 21-14 win.

edit - In 1975, the #1 ranking made the game more meaningful (scUM was undefeated also), but Troy's two drives were a better clutch performance.

this was much better than the rose bowl drive. ASU's secondary totally choked in that one. Weren't there like 2 pass interference penalties also? I'd rather have a drive where we made plays, rather than the other team making mistakes. the rose bowl drive was great because it was the rose bowl and it was so tense, but what just transpired is head and shoulders above that IMO.

Milwood is once again my "Psychological Savior" for the next 365 days. For, whenever I'm having a bad day and thinking that life sucks, all I have to do is log onto this site, check out Milwoods's "sig" with Troy, Gonzo, and the Final Score, and everything is "Good" again. Peace.

BB73, I remember the 1975 game like it was yesterday, and Corny did finally get his stuff together to get them back in the game at 14-14. The thing about that game was that it will always be remembered for Ray's interception. The drive to tie the game will always be overshadowed by the pick. Another great one was the 1981 game, where we pretty much did nothing the entire afternoon until Art lead us back with an 80 yard drive to take the lead late in the game and win it 14-9. Remember "1XBUCK," uh, I mean Vaughn Broadnax holding off about 4 defenders at the goal line to spring Art into the end-zone? Probably the greatest block ever delivered in "The Game."

i can't put a number on it, but at the very worst, it's top 10, but more likely, it's top 5 all time... "Holy Buckeye" may still be my all time favorite especially with what was riding on it at the time, but that wasn't with under 30 seconds on the clock at scUM in The Game... i dunno... it was a pretty clutch 4th quarter... i'm still savoring it... the magnitude-- and it is BIG-- of the win hasn't fully registered yet...

The '88 game against LSU was a pretty good one.

Bobby Olive caught a last second touchdown to win after being down by two scores.

But I don't know if anything can beat a GW drive against scUM...this one was for the ages.

All great drives but the 99 1/2 yard drive against Michigan in 1954 I feel was the best. I was there, sitting in section 13A. The stopping of Michigan at the 1/2 yard line and the following drive really started the winning Woody Era at Ohio State and his first National Championship.
There was no televised games then so you had to be one of the 80,000 in attendance to truly appreciate the Bucks smashing the ball down Michigan,s throat play after play with the croud getting louder with each play.
I think it also started my 50+ year love affair with Ohio State football.

I also have to toss in the drive against a great Iowa team when Bob White (our fullback) ran the ball vertually ever play in a 70+ yard drive. Bob smashed out 8 or 9 nine yards at a crack with Iowa knowing exactly what what was comind and were powerless to stop. All those plays were over guard or tackle. I believe that drive (and win) also led to a another National Championship.
We had a lot of those NCs back then.
