Do the twenty-five yards OSU went in OT # 1 against the 'Canes count as a drive? Krenzel and Jenkins convert 4th and 14! Are you kidding me!?!? The controversial (to fans of other teams ) flag . . .
Thinking back on all the other inputs, I came to this conclusion: I seem to recall an ancient discription of a last ditch drive, capped by a Chic Harley drop kick, that beat an Illinois powerhouse team and brought us our first Big 10 championship and led directly to the building of the 'Shoe. The 54 drive of 99.5 yards against Michigan began with a 50 some yard run by Hop Cassady and cemented Hayes as head coach. It began an era in which Ohio State expected to be the Big 10 champs each year and to be in consideration for the national championship. Drives, featuring long runs by Eddie George and Pepe Pearson, that broke the Notre Dame defenses in 95 and 96 answered questions about the strength of our program and tradition in comparison to theirs. The drive in the 97 Rose Bowl, beginning with a Pearson burst and ending with a Germaine to Boston pass, reidentified OSU as a national... as oppossed to regional...power and a team that could recruit nationally... let's give Coop credit for doing that...the drives against Michigan in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005... demonstrate a continuing determination to be the top program in the Big 10 and one of the top national programs. The short drive to win the NC in 2003, proved that speed and talent were just as present in the Buckeye program as they were in Florida and that with a long tradition comes the confidence, courage and determination to win when the odds are against you.
In short, there have been a lot of "greatest drives" in OSU history and it is that depth of tradition that makes it such an honor to wear scarlet and gray. It is that honor which brings in new recruits who want to prove them selves equal to the names that rest beneath the trees in the Buckeye Grove. Go Bucks!
Was it 1980 or 1981 when Art Schlichter rumbled and tumbled into the endzone with the help of Vaughn Broadnax to get the win over um? I can only remember the the TD in that game.
