As far as Bob Segar goes I never got into that "Heartland Rock" songs about being unemployed and your girl knocked up. Springsteen and Mellencamp also fit the bill.

You leave the Boss out of this.

Van Halen is leading? Come on.

And what is up with all the people who voted for like 8 bands? The question is who is the greatest American rock band, not who are some of the greatest American rock bands.

...1) GnR - Slash is amazing...
True this. Take 90% of the bands listed anywhere in this thread, and replace the (worst, for arguments sake) guitarist with Slash, and it instantly moves the band up the list, in some cases, considerably.

I've seen TSO a couple of times. Mind blowing on a couple of levels.

If they weren't seasonal, they would be in my top three list.

Speaking of seasonal, should Mannheim Steamroller be on the list? I've seen them also. Huge production, excellent singing and instrumentals. They sell out arenas quite handily, have had longevity, and do quite well on album sales.

They're not entirely seasonal anymore, with a new spring tour, and now a late spring tour in Europe. Their two non-Christmas albums are outstanding. If you like TSO, I really recommend some of the later Savatage albums. Like I said, Streets, Gutter Ballet, Dead Winter Dead, and Wake of Magellan are excellent albums and in similar format/style to TSO, only with one vocalists, not a collection.

Wow, he wasn't born there, but you take away all he has done because of where his parents forced him to live there as a child? He never took classes there. He may have grown up in Ann Arbor, but never claims it. He simply says "the Detroit area." From that it appears even he doesn't want to be associated with scUM. You may not think Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band are among the greatest, but to use his childhood neighborhood as the reason is pretty sad.

:shake: Apparently my sarcasm font is broken. You were the one joking about his bands name though, when he's clearly much closer to being a scUMmer.

And while I might not like Seger, RHCP is one of my favorite bands.

Despite not really listening to them anymore, Tool deserves some recognition.

As for the list.. I guess I'll go with Metallica, Nirvana and CCR. I'm not a Nirvana fan, but their impact on music is pretty crazy. Same with Metallica - but I like them. :p

This list made me realize how much I really don't care for American rock bands.. Metallica is the only one on the list I actually really like.

Tool is awesome. Melody and intelligence are things often lacking in hardrock/metal, and Tool brings a large degree of both. Musicianship is off the charts too. I just wish they'd come out with new music more often than every 5-6 years.

Country Dick would drink beer non-stop & do shots of tequila with the crowd while playing. He would regularly pass out behind the drum kit in during the of the show. He had a heart attack & died on stage in the same way and no one paid attention because they thought he was just drunk as usual.

Nice! Well, until that last part anyway. :(

In my opinion, Ohio's greatest band is Nine Inch Nails. I'm shocked NIN didn't get more rub here for America's Greatest Rock band. Maybe everyone thinks that it being basically one guy doesn't constitute a band? NIN has sold boatloads of albums, are critically acclaimed, highly influential, have longevity, and went on arena tours for 15 years.

And Reznor has a Grammy and an Oscar. That speaks for itself. :)
