Yeah... but VH is #1 right now, proving that at least 15 people don't know [Mark May]

Eh, it's how you look at it right.

You can go see who I voted for, and I want to be VERY clear that I hate the Eagles. But, it is what it is.

I mean, just depends how you want to do it. I could make a good case for the Ramones for example, but, I don't see how I could for, say, Steely Dan.

As far as the Nirvana and Pearl Jam, etc... I fear that I still don't know how to think about that. I've always kind of looked at them similarly to how I see the Sex Pistols and The Clash. Like them all, but, in my brain they get caught up with each other too much. (Point being, I think The Clash and Pearl Jam are the better "bands" but, I don't like them more, and I think the others are more representative of their genre.)

I'll shut up, I'm even confusing myself now.

'Native, what the hell do you care, it's not a Greatest Dancehall list.

depending on how one defines "greatest," for me, it's a battle between these six bands:

eagles
pearl jam
metallica
fleetwood mac
beach boys
van halen

Acclaimedmusic.net does a composite of critical reviews and ranks albums, songs and bands.

They have the following order for American artists:

1) Bob Dylan (Not a band)
7) Prince (Not a band)
8) Bruce Springsteen (Listed as a band in the choices here but that's debatable)
10) Elvis Presley (Not a band)
11) Jimi Hendrix (Again, debatable if this is really a band)
12) The Beach Boys
13) The Velvet Underground
14) Marvin Gaye (Not a band)
15) R.E.M.
19) Nirvana
20) Stevie Wonder (Not a band)
25) Talking Heads

The bolded is a pretty solid top 5.

If Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks want to go (re)form their own American band, then fine, but as long as they're under the name Fleetwood Mac, with Mick Fleetwood, who is British and formed the band with other Brits in London, then they're disqualified in my IMO.

i think a necessary component of determining the greatest rock band is touring success.

I think a necessary component of determining the greatest rock band is how much drinking the band does on-stage.

I agree. I would think the GREATEST rock band would be able to sell out arenas. VU is out, Talking Heads are out. Longevity, in my opinion, is also another key component. VU is out out again, Nirvana is out.

That leaves the Beach Boys and R.E.M. as the 2 bands that can claim massive critical success, touring success and success that lasted over a decade. Metallica and Pearl Jam, perhaps are the next in line?

Yeah i don't trust a website that has Oasis in the 30s or 40s and Pearl Jam at 101 just in front of Arcade Fire.... sorry... It also looked like alot of incomplete information as well.

Oasis does sound kind of high, but the Brits consider them rock royalty. Arcade Fire's 3 albums are probably more critically acclaimed than anything Pearl Jam has ever done. (Possible exception of "Ten")

I would question the sites weighting of albums. Bands with limited catalogs are able to compete favorably with bands that have been at it for years and years.

Oasis is good they've got good songs.. in my book they are no were near Pearl Jam ... Full disclosure... PJ has been my favorite band since TEN came out... seen them numerous times in concerts etc.

Arcade fire, the critics love them.. but I can listen to their albums once before I start cursing canada for subjecting us to them.

Pearl Jam is a top 10 band for me as well. I'd certainly rank them ahead of Oasis. I would have guessed the critics would have a slight edge to PJ too. After the first 2, Oasis put out a string of forgettable albums.

Arcade Fire is my favorite band that started up after 2000. They take repeated listens to get accustomed too, but it's worth the investment. I love all 3 albums, "The Suburbs" in particular. They aren't entirely Canadian. The 2 brothers in the band, including the front-man, are from The Woodlands, TX. (Northern Suburb of Houston)

This logic is a problem for me. If a band is truly great, then you should not have to listen to them more than once to know that they are a great band. If you have to force yourself to like them (as the bolded part implies) then they are not a great band, IMO.

Arcade Fire were out of my "comfort zone" and took some getting used to. It's totally normal for me to have music grow on me after a few listens. There have been dozens of times when I got an album by a group I've always liked that took some time to gel. There's also been plenty of times where I've listened to things over and over and still didn't like it.
