The great bicycle debate: moved from Schiano thread

Yesterday I was driving through Burbank (driving in LA area is the worst), a bike was riding in the road, and I had to pass them. Used to it, no problem. Then I got stopped by a red light. Fun thing about the area is at many intersections all of the lights turn red and all of the pedestrian walk signals turn on, pedestrians can even walk diagonal across the intersection. I wanted to turn right on red, and there were no pedestrians in that crosswalk so I started turning. Then the bike hops up on the sidewalk from behind me and runs through the light as a pedestrian. AFTER I HAD ALREADY STARTED TURNING. I damn near hit the stupid piece of [Mark May].

The fly by on the right of a potentially turning car at an intersection is, I suspect, the most dangerous thing commonly done by bicyclists (that and wearing headphones while riding).

I am a cyclist. Here is the problem. You try to stay near the side of the road (where there is no bike path) and some idiot will drive past as if you are not there. I don't know how many cyclists I know who have been knocked off when not in the middle of the road, with broken arms, legs, and fractured skulls. Also, I and those I ride with obey the laws. It was the same with runners. Always some idiot behind the wheel, speeding, not looking where the hell he/she is going, and hitting a runner or cyclist who is in the right place.

Two sides to this folks.

Plus we've got coal rollers out here. The problem isn't bicyclists or cars: It's assholes who ride and drive. You also have bicyclists who will buzz pedestrians a la drivers buzzing bicyclists. I was running, fairly slowly I'll concede, on a run/bike path (I stay right at all times) but moved a little further right to let a cyclist go by and the dude says "good boy" as he zooms past: Fucktard was fortunate that I didn't have a rock in my hand . . .

How is there two sides to that?

The guy in the car has a choice to stay in his lane so as not to chance a head on collision with an oncoming car or just keep going and hope he doesn't clip the person trying to get their exercise on a road not built for what they are trying to do.

Easy choice for me. The cyclist is just body work damage. The oncoming car can be death not only for me but the poor unsuspecting bastard in the oncoming car who's doing nothing more than driving down the road.

I just don't see how anyone can justify others risking life and limb so they can get some exercise.

Cyclists (serious ones, anyway) have to stay well left of the berm because of the loose gravel, dislodged coal patch, broken glass, and storm drains. Taking a skinny-ass tire through that at speed is a recipe for disaster. I know this, so am understanding when cyclists are out a bit into the road.

After I pass, if I get stopped at a red light and the cyclist I waited two minutes to overtake comes flying up by my passenger door to get to the front of the line and do it all over again. Well, all bets are off ... I'm buzzing the fucker.

Sorry you are so pissy about it but the 3 second wait is a total fallacy. It isn't incompetent driving, it's the reality of hills, curves and the like. You can't always safely just slow down for 3 seconds and go around. Often you and 30 other people are stuck behind some dickhead doing 5mph on his bike until you can actually find a reasonably safe place to cross the center line (which is inherently dangerous no matter what) to get around the prick.

You have to risk life and limb to get around these fucking jackasses every day. They should ride where there are bike lanes (and then stay in them) or take their Lance Armstrong wannabe, spandex wearing fat asses down to a gym like normal people.

Adults driving their cars to work or their kids to school should not have to take risks for these cocksuckers.
Disagree. Bikers can share the road. i realize that is just my IMO, but I don't have a problem with it. FWIW, I'm not a rider and I live off of country road that is glorious and hence bikers love it. So, I do know what you are talking about, there are sometimes stretches of road for a mile, not 3 seconds, where I'm following. But I don't begrudge anyone exercising on the bike. But I get that you and I won't ever agree on that.

As challenging as the "problem" is here, you should take some drives through the south of England. I was stuck behind a rider for at least 5 minutes on a "country lane". Many of those roads are barely wide enough for a single car-so getting around anything is an adventure.

Cyclists have a right, by law, to be anywhere in a lane. The stones, glass and etc are a real hazard. A motorist by law must pass safely.

According to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, the minimum speed rule is in place to ensure that motorists do not operate their vehicles in a way that causes problems with normal traffic flow.

I'd be in prison

I used to live on a country back road that Bikers loved to hoard to in flocks. There were only a few spots where it was really "safe" to cross the center line and go around them. Basically if you got stuck behind them it was a 10-15 minute waste of your time until one of these spots. You don't understand the actual frustration until youve lived it.

I really dont get why they love windy narrow country roads so much, it's literally the most dangerous place to ride your bike. Considering you have to be in middle of the road and theres tons of blind spots where someone might have very little reaction time to slow down behind you.
