The great bicycle debate: moved from Schiano thread

Bikers/pedestrians do have right of way, so to that degree they do own the road.

but they are required to follow the same traffic laws as motorists are

thus when I see them constantly running stop signs and going below the minimum speed limit in the middle of the road I want to reenact that video from ORD

This. They want motorists to abide by the laws, but they themselves do not (a good majority of them at least)

ERRONEOUS. A bike is a vehicle and as such it is subject to standard right of way laws. A bikey can't run a red light, get plowed and claim to have the right of way. In such a situation (or a hundred other), the driver is legally and financially not at fault.

That imbecile in Chicago who got skidmarked by the tour bus was judged at fault, and the bus driver didn't so much as receive a ticket.
Ok good info. I B incorrect then.

Agreed.

My recommendation is that they get their exercise in a gym like normal human beings and leave the child's toy in the yard where it belongs.

If normal human beings exercised you may have a point, unfortunately most are fat sloths especially in Columbus. Bikers clearly can't maintain the minimum speed limit thus they aren't allowed on highways. If a biker does something stupid they deserve to get hit and also get a ticket. If a driver buzzes a biker or does something stupid they deserve the ticket. To say people shouldn't be able to bike on a road is ignorant as hell.

one car having to risk a head on collision with another car (both full of innocent people) because it has to cross the center line to get around some jack ass who's too good to work out elsewhere seems more ignorant to me but to each his own.

Yesterday I was driving through Burbank (driving in LA area is the worst), a bike was riding in the road, and I had to pass them. Used to it, no problem. Then I got stopped by a red light. Fun thing about the area is at many intersections all of the lights turn red and all of the pedestrian walk signals turn on, pedestrians can even walk diagonal across the intersection. I wanted to turn right on red, and there were no pedestrians in that crosswalk so I started turning. Then the bike hops up on the sidewalk from behind me and runs through the light as a pedestrian. AFTER I HAD ALREADY STARTED TURNING. I damn near hit the stupid piece of shit.

I don't even drive much in the city, preferring the L or Lyft, and I've still lost count of how many times that I've had to swerve or slam on the brakes to save one of these imbeciles' lives. And more often than not, I get flipped off for my troubles.

Or the one car can slow down for 3 seconds and then drive around easily. Incompetant driving should not be excused be it driving a car or bike nor should incompetant walking be it a pokeman player or just an idiot. If you can't see a bike rider from a distance or react properly maybe you shouldn't be driving. last post on this subject from me.

Sorry you are so pissy about it but the 3 second wait is a total fallacy. It isn't incompetent driving, it's the reality of hills, curves and the like. You can't always safely just slow down for 3 seconds and go around. Often you and 30 other people are stuck behind some dickhead doing 5mph on his bike until you can actually find a reasonably safe place to cross the center line (which is inherently dangerous no matter what) to get around the prick.

You have to risk life and limb to get around these fucking jackasses every day. They should ride where there are bike lanes (and then stay in them) or take their Lance Armstrong wannabe, spandex wearing fat asses down to a gym like normal people.

Adults driving their cars to work or their kids to school should not have to take risks for these cocksuckers.

I am a cyclist. Here is the problem. You try to stay near the side of the road (where there is no bike path) and some idiot will drive past as if you are not there. I don't know how many cyclists I know who have been knocked off when not in the middle of the road, with broken arms, legs, and fractured skulls. Also, I and those I ride with obey the laws. It was the same with runners. Always some idiot behind the wheel, speeding, not looking where the hell he/she is going, and hitting a runner or cyclist who is in the right place.

Two sides to this folks.
