Taking a cruise in 2022 with wife and daughter. From Barcelona to Lisbon. Got surprised when I found out it was a golf cruise, and my wife had signed me up. Anyway, all the courses are in Spain: El Saler; Finca Curtesin; La Reserva; and Royal Seville. Valderamma was on the list but got cancelled, bummer. Our country club general manager was an Asst Pro at Finca, and said all the courses are great, all four in top seven of Spain. Anyone played on anyone of these? PS, Matt, golf buddy is going to play your course in Branson, and is urging a 'buddy trip' there, as Branson has become a golf destination. I'll just stay and play our Monterey courses......

BucksStocksHere, the 'host' is Perry Golf.....perrygolf.com would be where you'd start. The cruise line we use is Azamera, a smallish (625 passenger). Can get into some ports that the big boys cannot. As I related above, we're going from Barcelona to Lisbon, but they also go the other way (L to B), and eastern med. Not certain if they do a golf trip on other lines, but go for it. My first golf excursion as well. Wife and daughter will see some of the sights, and I'll tee it up. The last (actually our first) cruise had alot of gray hairs among passengers, so maybe I can outdrive someone! Oh yeah, there's someone that you can e-mail for further info, which I did, so you can get the scoop on what is included. They also have a 'golf shipping' discount when you use who they recommend. Good luck. Not until 2022, so maybe we'll tee it up together!

I threw this out to my golf group and got one guy highly interested in the idea of playing golf then grabbing a cigar, eating a lobster/steak and hitting the casino. It would be hard to go on with my wife as I’d be bailing on her each day to play golf and probably be gone for about 7 hours or so when you factor in travel times and whatnot. Going with a buddy - now we are talking...or both of us with wives so they can hang on the boat or go on the other excursions. It’s a very interesting thing to consider in a couple of years perhaps.

Let me know when you go, and I'll give you a few of my favorites on the Monterey Peninsula. You'll probably hit the wharf, which has several very good restaurants. Fresh calamari with clam chowder (plus sourdough bread) is my usual. Plus if you're staying at the PB, the food there is very good. Pricey, but good. The breakfasts over at Poppy Hills golf course (short trip) are great (course is championship caliber as well), and my favorite golf course is Spyglass Hill. I consider it better than PB, or PH, but has been priced out of my range (what I'm willing to spend). I'm a member of NCGA, so play discounted at PH. Have a great trip.

My buddy said he actually thinks spyglass is the better course too...interesting. He said it may not have as many holes along the ocean but he liked it more.

I expect everything to be crazily priced, relative to what I’m used to paying. Hell i had sticker shock when I went to NYC for training about 20 years ago and we stopped at TGI Friday’s for lunch and had a burger, fries, and ice tea and I believe it was around $40..... made me want to puke. That’s no more than $15 here locally.

I was also told staying there IS required, not by them but just to take in the entire environment....fireplace....post rounds cigars and drinks, etc...

Guys I’m going with are big seafood folks so that would be good......I’m big on fish of all types, not as much on the crustacean side of things... plus I actually think Lobster is not very good and will never order it again(tried it fresh out of the water in Maine - didn’t like it then, still don’t)

Not sure I’ve ever head of Poppy Hills but that might a nice side trip if we extend our stay(if is is public???)

I’ve played Firestone in Akron a few times....south and west course, not the north. It’s obviously a great place to play....not cheap however. Might have to remember “Good Park” (funny name for a golf course) if I’m roaming around the area ever. I played Boulder Creek last year and was amazed by it. It’s a guaranteed five hour round, which blows, but its even on their scorecard. I guess folks lose tons of balls and rounds take forever.... I would never go play a course again with that round time, but I would go there again - that tells you how much I liked the track.

Longest round ever played - 6 hours 15 minutes. Took us 7 years to go back and try it again. Worst experience of my life the first time. We pulled up to our tee time and there were FIVE foursomes still waiting to tee off that had times in front of us. Should have gone home right then, but waited and oh boy.....why I didn’t end up drunk that day I’ll never know.

To put Good Park's $18 green fee in perspective... I'm pretty sure I had days I lost $18 on balls on Firestone North.

To really demoralize, play Firestone South just days after a major tournament. I looped a bunch and First National Bank always had a guest tournament for it's high rollers from around the country the day after the World Series. I had scratch golfers almost lose their minds struggling to break 90 or 100. The course wasn't back into 'member shape'. Play from pro tees. The rough had many tiers to it up to 3 feet deep grass if you were 10 yards off the fairway. Thick heavy grass would envelop the ball if you were 2 yards off the fairway. The greens had the consistency of a billiard table. Guys that were proud of their driver had holes they couldn't reach the fairway with a hammer drive. Was always a fun day to loop. Good thing the bank paid us cuz golfers had to see a therapist
