I am coming up to Ohio to visit family in a couple of weeks. The plan is to get out and play a round of golf with a few old friends. Two of the guys live in Columbus and I will be staying just North of Cincinnati. Can anyone recommend a good public course just south of Columbus?

Both of those would be my choices... unless it's been raining recently. The "bottoms" at Cooks tends to turn into a flooded swamp after a heavy rain.

Players Club is a legitimate course. If you can't break 95 on a consistent basis stay very far away from this one (or bring an extra dozen balls).

Thanks for the heads up. I have been hitting the ball left a lot lately. I actually put up a round in the mid-90s not too long ago, but the last few rounds have been back where they should be. Have many of the courses up there been aerated yet?

As I mentioned awhile back I spending the weekend up in Kohler, Wisconsin. I had the chance to play Blackwolf Run-Meadow Valley course today; http://www.americanclubresort.com/golf/bwr/valleys_detail.html . I played it from the tips in about a 20-30 mph wind. Most of the time it felt like it was in my face. I played like shit on the front, shot 44. Turned it around on the back posting 38. I liked the back nine a lot better. The front was just very open and not much to it, except well protected greens. The back nine was stunning, 14 especially. It runs along a small river in which I saw a gentleman fly fishing. I highly recommend if anyone gets the chance to play don't pass it up. They are hosting the US Women's Open on the River course this summer.

Tomorrow I get to play Whistling Straits. I will give a summary of that tomorrow.

Wood, have heard the Straits is one of the 'new' classics. Cannot wait to hear your abstract of the course......

You mean to tell me that you shot better than bogey golf in a 2-3 club wind and called it [Mark May]? Well, then all I can say is :bow: to you! Most of us would give their left nut to do that well. You must have been playing the back loop 'with' the wind to shoot 2 over :biggrin:. (actually playing downwind is harder for me than into the wind)......

Look, if you're nearing 50, maybe we golf-playing BPers can sponsor you on the mulligan (Senior) tour. Take you out of your brokering job and make an honest golfer out of you.......methinks we'd make our money back and more.....

Ha! I am only 31 and nowhere good enough for the senior tour. Though that is how I justify my golf expenditures to my wife--just trying to get better so I can play on the Senior PGA. Fourteenandoh is the BPer to back, last time I played a round with him he shot 69.

Straits was awesome and everything I hoped for. I was not able to play the Straits course--hadn't opened for the season yet, I settled for the Irish course. It rates out at 75.1 145 and 7250 from the tips. I took a caddie, ensuring I got the complete experience. Being in mid April I had the tee slot all to myself, though I had to follow a 2some and a 4 some, neither had game or played quick. It took me 4:24 to play, waiting on every shot. First off my caddie was awesome, even if he has three kids at UW. He said he only carries for players whom play the tips 6-7 times a year out of the 200 bags a year he loops. He set every hole up perfect for me, placing my tee ball in optimal spots all day. I hit 11 GIR and had 35 putts. Leaving everything short, the greens were not quick--but man I wish I could putt. I ended up shooting 81. Felt easily could of been 75-76 if some putts dropped. I hit the tee ball exceptionally well all day and I feel that's the most important part of the straits courses. If you spray the tee ball you are screwed. Bunkers, mounds and thick rough abound. I was able to take some pretty nice pictures with my iPhone, which I will post later.

I highly suggest that everyone should make the trip.

Cant wait to see the pics. Going back to Monterey end of April, play Poppy Hills before closes for renovations, and probably either Black Horse or Bayonet the next day. All three will kick my fanny, have a shot at Poppy of breaking 85, the others no way.

My home course is playing nicely, except next week they are aeriating the greens and fairways to get ready for the 100 degree summers around here. They are cutting and rolling the greens, so have already switched to a lighter putter, as three-jabs are much easier to achieve with my mallet. Keep up the postings, if I cannot shoot 'em like you and Fourteenandoh, I can live vicariously through your experiences.

Since I'm now retired, probably take the wife down to Palm Springs and play some of the courses there, any recommendations? Want to play PGA west, and any of the courses the Hope plays on, just to say I did so, but don't recollect any of the 'Best Courses' being down there...

So, I set out this year with the goal of shooting in the 80s. I just shot an 88 yesterday on a par 72 course! It could have been so much better though. I had a 4 over 40 on the front side and lost two balls on the back. lol

I guess it's time for a new goal. I'm thinking even 80 by the end of summer. :biggrin:
