... my group (a 2, and two 6's) have informed me that I'm a 'sweeper' and that's why I'm not as long as they are, and my irons don't bite or pull back.
Irons "bite" if there's enough spin put on them. Spin is a function of several things, including clubhead speed, angle of attack, and the ball you use. Swing plane isn't the only thing, and it's quite possible to hit long iron shots with plenty of spin even if you take no divot.

find an area where you can pace off yardage without getting killed (ie not on a crowded driving range). take a bag of old balls and a towel. tell him to learn a 30 yard shot, a 50 yard shot and a 70 yard shot. once you have those down, fine tune it to 30, 40, 50, 60, 70. then take it a step further and learn to hit high soft shots and low burning shots from each distance. i swear that will drop strokes off your handicap faster than any other technique i know. it doesn't matter how bad you hit your driver, if you can get up and down from 50 yards you aren't going to shoot much higher than 80.

i had a golf course a few blocks from my house growing up. i would ride out to the 13th hole about 40 minutes before dark and do that drill. i couldn't hit the ball for [censored] in high school (i literally averaged 3 GIR per 9 holes my sophomore year), but i could get up and down.
Man, what a great post this is!

I also agree strongly with this. If he has a buddy or a partner to practice with you can make a game out of it. We used to play "Golf Bocce" for hours on end and it definitely takes the monotony out of practicing. Take a marker ball and throw it out to one of those distances then play just like bocce, scoring by who can get closest to the marker. You can also do this same game with putting if you can find a nice big practice green with different lies. My short game has never been as good as the years when we had time to do this.

good luck to him.

Sand traps.

Question, with many courses ignoring their sand traps these days, what do you do in unraked bunkers with water standing in them?

I've long been a proponent of grass bunkers instead of sand bunkers, much more difficult to get out of but that's a different topic for a different day.

I know many people who just drop out behind the bunkers b/c they say that pros do not have to play in conditions like that which I have no argument to.

Didn't know if anyone just raked a spot for a ball and then put the the ball on the raked sand like I do? I will admit though that sometimes the bunkers are so full of water or in such disrepair that I have to just drop behind the bunker as well.

If you're going to have bunkers, take care of them.

He's back...

Carded a personal best 74 yesterday at Hickory Hills (although I was playing the blues because the three guys I was with were all playing there...I normally play the blacks). Bogeyed 1 and 2 and then finished the front side in -3...birdied 5 (20 foot putt), 7 (five iron to 3 feet) and 8 (got home in two and barely missed an eagle putt). Hit every GIR between 3 and 11 with the exception of 4 where I got up and down from about 55 yards after chunking my 3-wood off the tee. So I went out in 35. Pars on 10 and 11 before hitting my drive on 12 out-of-bounds and had to re-tee. Ended up making double but came back with pars on 13, 14, 17 and 18 (and just missed par putts on 15 and 16).

Still missing tee shots to the left (only hit six fairways and half of those were with a 5-wood), though less to the left after moving the ball back in my stance off the tee.

I fight pulling and hooking the ball of the tee as well. I guess too many years of baseball being a pull-hitter.

Anyhow, when I slow my swing down, the hook disappears and slight draws down the gut appear.

I have tried slowing things down as well but I have a tendency to get my hips turned too early if I slow things down too much...

Anyone on the Yahoo Handicap Tracker, we have a BP group here:

I've used Yahoo for years.

Currently an 8.5.

Played Cooks Creek from the tips yesterday and shot 82.

My best round there.

Going on my yearly golf trip to Oglebay this weekend. :banger:
