I realize the wound is fresh. But in speaking to previous coaches and styles.
All coaches need to be evolving. Nick Saban went from a Defense focused team with a run heavy offense. Once the rules changed he adapted to a style of play that was being bolstered by the rule changes. You also need to adapt to the players and how the refs are calling the game.
I am not able to say if Day is off point or on point. I do think it is obvious that he is getting a lot right. But he is clearly getting the big games wrong. The reality is he is playing 3-4 games a year max that put him and the team to the test. And right now he is not doing well in those games. Kind of how Harbaugh was his first 5 years. This is the struggle with most tOSU coaches when looking at their records. The recruiting power and system that the Buckeyes have basically drives 9+ wins a season regardless how how great the HC is during that time. And this is where it gets so tough. Because on one hand people will say that he won 11 games. But he was only challenged 3-4 (this season). And last season it was 3 games max and he went 1-2 (assuming PSU with SCum and Georgia).
So here is the issue. What is his record against SCum, PSU, Playoff games? And this season he had ND. And I am sure in past seasons he had another team during the regular season that would be considered worthy or a challenge. That is really what you need to analyze. The other 8-9 wins a season are a gimme based on talent.
For someone looking from the outside more or less. I think Day is a really good coach and a really clever guy. I think he does not quite get the college game. And by that I mean he coaches scheme and prep. And he does not quite seem to grasp the importance of getting a team to peak emotionally. The best college coaches have a great ability to get the team to focus and emotionally ride a wave to win games. For me Day had seemed to be a bit stoic at times then overly emotional or tense at times. And he has not quite figures out how to coach a whole season and get the team to play its very best for specific games. Because there is zero chance in my mind that SCum should be on a 3 game bender. At least this year it was close so I do think Day is learning. And that is the final question. Is he evolving and should he be given 2-3 more years? Or should the AD start thinking next coach up?
Realize you really need to stop talking about the 9 wins he gets auto filled each season. How is he and the team looking in the games where the other squad has similar/same/better talent? That is all you need to discuss.
