Its their front seven that are the key.

Manningham has not demonstrated he is 100% - and I forsee someone punishing him on his first attempt at a catch, after which that wellness percentage is downwardly revised.

Henne can be rushed and harried - and most QBs have difficulty making good decisions when flat on their back, a toss-up between Gholston with pressure or Laurinaitis through the gap being the first to make Henne eat dirt.

Arrington without Manningham is not, well, as good as a 100% Manningham.

Breaston is brimming with potential no doubt - but has yet to see a truly good hit, and as Hardy (IN) said, this defense (and the special teams for that matter) punishes you, they hit with very bad intentions.

Hart is their toiler in (or behind) the trenches - it is critical that Ohio State hold down his numbers, string out his runs to the edge, and get a hat on him if he gets through the line. Low C of G makes him harder to hit - Bucks have been up the task before, they need to be up to it again.

For my money the strength of Michigan comes down to that Defensive front seven. The best means to wear which down is for Ohio State's defense to take care of business, keeping them out on the field of play more than they have had to be in prior contests this year, by keeping their offense off the grass in the Shoe. Then our Offense can find those gaps in their coverage - which is a weakness, one that has been rarely tested this year.

Cato June predicted a "22 point Michigan win over Ohio" on the Jim Rome show a couple weeks ago....

All of the scUM players talk shit up to the game. They do it every year.

All In

Has anyone else looked at the vcash 'banks' of people who are posting on this thread? I was, and noticed that most of the banks were on 'zero'. It looks to me like most all of us are 'All In' for this game.

I, too, am hesitant, mainly due to prior performances. I'm still heart-broken about the worst loss in OSU history - 1969 loss to Michigan - that kept the Super Sophs from probably three natinal titles (would have beaten Stanford in 1970, I'm sure :biggrin: ). Pre-Tres- Michigan beat higher ranked OSU more often than OSU beat higher ranked Michigan. (Grad, Mili, am I correct here?)

Anyway, just a casual observation. I can't wait. Probably won't take a breath of oxygen for 3 hours!

Great response sandgk. I'll try to match in quantity if not quality. I think this thread could use some more legitimate the GAME football talk.


I agree with most everything you say but I don't think we can emphasize enough taking Hart away. It seems if we make Henne's O one dimensional, the game is ours to lose. Generally teams drive some on us early (1st, partial 2nd quarter), we stop the run game or adjust appropriately and then we spread the score out.

What I'm most curious about is whether or not we're going to blitz a lot early on. Considering that JT & Heacock's priority #1 is to stop the run (I would think), I bet we're tentative with blitzing early and focus on gap assignments and clogging the line to force the run outside like you said. If Hart can run with ease, we could be in some serious trouble.

I think scUM's front seven is a great group, BUT...if there's one thing I think we can do to slow down their rush, it's get the ball to our receivers quick on hot routes like slants and outs. Our WRs are catching nearly everything and Troy is obviously spot on most of the time. If we can't get the run going (which is very possible), for the simple fact that Troy is who he is, I still like our odds throwing the ball 30-35 times in this game.

Another thing...I don't think we can ever look past the importance of Troy's legs. He didn't need to run all season because our line played fantastic and he has acquired some serious poise and pocket patience. He has done an amazing job of going through his progressions but with heavy pressure from Woodley & Co. I would love to see Troy make them pay with his mobility like he has in years past. I wouldn't be surprised if he has 15 carries in this game. Sometimes it feels like he hasn't shown that much of that side of his game just to unleash it on scUM which I'm sure isn't true, but it sure does make it tougher for them to gameplan. Do we use designed QB runs in this game to shake things up? Who knows.

Lastly, won't it be fun to see the playbook JT & Co. break out for this one? I feel like they've been holding back all year. I expect to see at least 4-5 brand new plays to put a serious wrinkle in our attack. A Ted reverse would be fun to see again. I also LOVE and expect a few of the play action passes where Troy fakes the handoff to Pittman, takes a couple steps forward and then pulls back for the throw. That play is a thing of beauty.

If MM is slowed due to his injury, it's going to really impede scUM's chances on Offense. I see them having some success early on with the run, but I see us adjusting by the 2nd Quarter well enough to keep Hart to under 100 yds for the day.

Because MM may not be 100% we may see more quick hitters and even more screens and flair passes (is that even possible?) in scUM's play calling. But I think, they think, they can beat us by running the ball and by being more physical.

That's one of the things I am going to look for. How physical are the Buck's going to be in this game? This has to be our most physical output of the year. They know that they cannot match us in the speed department and so their only other option is to play hard, smashmouth football. I also believe that they will try to control the clock and therefore shorten the game. The way to beat tOSU is by keeping Troy off the field. No ball, no magic.

Stop Hart as much as possible.
Make Henne try to beat us.
He is going to wet himself... the statistic that will be echoing in his head all day will be, "22 interceptions!!! 22 interceptions!!"

Then... he becomes #23.

and #24.

tsun won't know what to do if we come out five wide. we can spread em out and throw it all over or have troy run all over for third year in a row. why don't we ever see pittman and beanie in backfield together? split em and see what scum can do. how bout troy pitt beanie and mo wells runnin the wishbone...then pull back and hit ginn deep. we have so many weapons. sorry lllloyd. buckeyes to glendale. :oh:
