The 2020 College Football Season

Big 10 to announce they are going to an 8 game conference schedule only. Announcement shortly.

This will be the only way to have a season this year, and I applaud them for doing it.

Every conference needs to cancel OOC games, and focus on an 8 game season, if we are going to get anything at all.

This will give the conference (4) extra weeks to plan/practice, and come up with contingency plans.

For example, if an outbreak happens on a specific campus, they can utilize other stadiums to hold a game...

Hypothetically Nebraska is to play Michigan State, but East Lansing has an outbreak.....if Michigan is away, their stadium could be used to hold game. Or game would default to Nebraska.

It's going to be a funky season, but it's better than nothing.

This will allow Big 10 additional time to see if they add Rutgers or have them sit season out.

at the beginning of march, we were having conversations about how we might get the ncaa tournament to work out. how foolish do those conversations appear now?

in a month or two, that's how we're going to look back on these conversations about having an october start.

We didn't know jack about it then...but I think, maybe, possibly we know more, right? I mean my Facebook feed is full of experts.

I don't think so, but you may be correct.

A lot of schools are so desperate for these TV contracts/$$$ though. Not necessarily Big 10 schools who have so much funding, but many universities don't have that luxury. The revenue generated by football keeps entire athletic department afloat and pays the bills, including jobs for a lot of people who work in the department.

You know a conference like the SEC is going to play. I'd put money on it. A lot of it will come down to each leagues appetite for risk.

In any event, it was ludicrous to think, for example, after the outbreak we just had with our own athletic department, that we'd then send 100 people out to Eugene in September. I don't think they'd want us for one, and I don't think our team would be that comfortable making the trip. At least this gives us a shot at playing ball. I'll take 8 games versus nothing every time. Even the 8 isn't guaranteed, but I appreciate the effort.

Stanford just cut 11 of their 36 sports. Have to wonder if they're budgeting based on the assumption that there will be no football revenue. And if memory of Andy Geiger serves me correctly, every single scholarship in their AD is fully funded, which would cover the highest cost in the AD.

If the SEC goes to Conference only, we’d like add two more games against cross divisional opponents to make up for OOC games being cancelled.

So in theory, we could end up playing Auburn, Alabama and LSU in the same year.
