It's ridiculous to claim that because players are intimidated by Tiger that it is any kind of unfair advantage. There's a reason why competitors are intimidated, because they know how good he is and he throws them off of his game. The fact that he throws everyone off their game like that just makes him that much better of a competitor.
Also, don't try to say that all of the other golfers have worse playing conditions. There are thousands of people everywhere Tiger goes, and hundreds of cameras watching every single one of his moves. There's no other player who has to deal with more press, fans, attention, or expectations than Tiger does.
Intimidation is one thing. It's not much to intimidate someone Luke Donald's age. However, I don't think all of the players are intimidated by him. A couple have kicked his ass solidly this year.
As for playing with larger crowds, every player who plays in Tiger's group (twosome, threesome) is playing with exactly the same crowd. The difference is that Tiger plays a shot and then goes through all the exaggerated behavior trying to whip up his fans in the gallery. This unsettles the gallery and they are moving around and talking while his competitors play.
Next time, watch the gallery closely as Tiger plays and as his opponents play. Be open and fair in your assessment and you will see what I mean.
My point, which I am not sure you understood as I meant it, was that Jack Nicklaus never had to resort to that kind of behavior. He played his shot and then stood and watched the other man play. No fist pumping or histrionics. He WAS intimidating, but mainly in his aggressive shotmaking not by whipping up the crowd like Tiger does.
Golf isn't the NFL.
I share your belief that Tiger is "all that". I'm just saying that he needs to stop the other crap so that we can all see it better.
I'm just sick of the rest of the field taking a collective piss down their legs and handing these wins to Tiger. It's not like Tiger went super low yesterday. It's not like he played some "perfect round" or mistake free...Any one of the big names out there are talented enough to go lower, but they never do on Sundays...As someone said earlier, there is no one pushing Tiger at all like Jack used to get pushed...
I believe they showed a graphic yesteray that should show you that Jack didn't necessarily face tougher competition.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it said that in regards to par through their first 12 major wins, Jack was something like 30 over and Tiger was something like 117 under par.
Yes I know there is better technology today but not 147 strokes worth.
While that is an impressive stat, I do believe it is nothing more than technology and course set up. The equipment is light years ahead of what they used back then...It would be interesting to see a "Retro Tourney" and make these guys play with all 1970's equipment...I would love to see if my opinion has any merit or not...
actually, it is. you can play your game the way you want it. nobody is playing defense on you. you don't need to know how every other player is doing.BayBuck said:Ah, I had forgotten that golf is played in a vacuum... but wait, how does Tiger indimidate his opponents if he doesn't actually have any?
yet only tiger has figured this outactually, it is. you can play your game the way you want it. nobody is playing defense on you. you don't need to know how every other player is doing.
