The 2006 PGA Championship--Official Thread

I think that Tiger Woods may well end up carrying away the Jack Nicklaus crown as "best ever." He has won 25% of the tournaments he has entered since turning pro. A simply incredible achievement. He quietly does a lot in the social upliftment side of things and I understand why people like him.

But its possible that all of this will will be tarnished by his actions on the course. I don't know how to say this politely, so I will be direct.

I just wish he would stop playing the gallery to intimidate the people he plays against. And, let's be honest, that is exactly what he is up to, and its not classy.

Golf is a game of concentration. So, while I don't despise Tiger or his fans, when his fans start talking and clicking cameras just to break his opponents' concentration in their backswings and Tiger keeps trying to rev them up with his histrionics, I can find something else to watch on television.

I really think we may be witnessing the greatest golfer of his age, but with all due respect to Tiger, he needs badly to watch how Jack handled himself during his prime. Jack never did anything to put another opponent off his game or to ruin their concentration. Tiger does and that is why Jack Nicklaus still commands so much more respect around the world than Tiger does.

Tiger is great for golf. He'd be greater if he got his act together and played with the sense of fairness and class that Jack exhibited throughout his career.

Yeah Tiger is all class, especially that move on Thursday when he missed the putt and decided it best to make a "jacking-off" motion. :shake:

Wow, talk about being devoid of any sense of humor.. That's actually funny that he would do something like that (if it's even true), seeing as about every other person with a competitive personality would react in such fashion.

I couldn't disagree more. Tiger deals with more interruptions than anyone I've seen play.

I respect your opinion, Thump, but your response doesn't speak to the issues I raised. And, isn't it possible that those disruptions occur because of Tiger's fist pumping and exaggerated behavior on the fairways and greens, which whips the fans up?

Next time you watch him play, watch his behavior closely on the greens, not as a fan of his but as a fan of the opposing players. You will quickly see what I mean.

Again, I really like Tiger Woods and believe he is the greatest golfer of the day and perhaps of all time. That's all the more reason for him to stop that crap.

People getting on Tiger for being intimidating is ridiculous. Golfers are afraid of Tiger before he steps on the course on the weekend. There is no more focused, dominate athlete than Tiger Woods. Jack and Tiger both won not because of their immeasurable talent, but because of their unbreakable determination.

Wouldn't players being afraid of tiger before they get to the course kind of detract from his 'greatness'?

Tiger is not "classy" on the course. Off the course, sure he is. But you can't sit there and say that he is on the course. When he plays poorly he throws clubs (too many times to cite), bitches about the fans moving around, cusses up a storm (US Open at Pebble when he said nice shot fucking cock sucker after hooking his tee shot into the ocean on 18) or when he makes certain hand gestures after missing putts. This stuff doesn't bother me becuase I do it all the time when I play, but that doesn't mean its classy.

...seeing as about every other person with a competitive personality would react in such fashion.

Would it be fair to say that anyone who goes through what it takes to get in the PGA would have a competitive personality? And, isn't it equally accurate to say that almost all of the other players are NOT doing that?

I'm a Tiger fan, but I disagree. What would golf be if everyone acted like Tiger?

It's ridiculous to claim that because players are intimidated by Tiger that it is any kind of unfair advantage. There's a reason why competitors are intimidated, because they know how good he is and he throws them off of his game. The fact that he throws everyone off their game like that just makes him that much better of a competitor.

Also, don't try to say that all of the other golfers have worse playing conditions. There are thousands of people everywhere Tiger goes, and hundreds of cameras watching every single one of his moves. There's no other player who has to deal with more press, fans, attention, or expectations than Tiger does.
