The 2006 PGA Championship--Official Thread

It beginning to look more and more likely that Tiger will pass Jack in total majors. He may finish with 22+ major victories, unless some young stud comes along in the next few years.

I do believe that Jack had tougher competition over the years although the overall field in today's game is superior. Jack's major career lasted 24 years and he had to outlast some present and future Hall of Famers (Palmer, Player, Casper, Boros, Trevino, Watson, Ballesteros, Floyd, Irwin, Nelson) as each of the before mentioned had more than three major victories in their career. Only time will tell in the next decade whether Tiger's competion will stack up against Nicklaus' competition.

I think in terms of talent the guys now are better, but in terms of mental toughness and testicular fortitude the guys Jack played against were way, way better then. Case in point: Jack won 18, and finished 2nd 19 more times...demonstrating that the guys he played against like Watson, Palmer, and Player didn't wilt and go away like the guys do now when Tiger is around the leaderboard. It doesn't diminish what Tiger has accomplished, because he is head and shoulders above everyone, but nowadays the guys with mental toughness like DiMarco don't have the talent to compete with him, and th guys with the game like Phil just can't stand up to him mentally.

To use a crappy analogy to a crappy movie, Tiger is like Iceman in Top Gun...no mistakes, he runs you around, forces you to do something stupid, and then he has you. He never gives a major away when he's up there, but no one can seem to take one from him. That's where guys like Watson and Player were better.

I don't want to say that I can't stand Tiger, but I can't stand major championships when Tiger is in the lead. I have nothing against Tiger personally, but it is so boring to watch when he plays like that. When he first would win he would always do something spectacular. Now, all he does is hit fairways hit greens then drop a couple bombs and birdie the par 5's (easy game huh?). It is just boring to watch. As far as the rest of the field goes they would have had to shoot 66 or better to catch him. That just isn't going to happen very often. Luke could have played better though.

fourteenandoh weir -11
iambrutus dimarco -8
Saw31 furyk -3
Bucklion glover +1
THE WOOD verplank +4 MC

Glover had a rough weekend. shot 7 over. DiMarco played awesome on the front nine Saturday. I thought he was going to make a move, but he kind of stalled out on the back nine. Weir should have tied the all time major record of 63 on Saturday. He played so well, but 73 on Sunday sucks.

Tiger is truly one of the elite golfers, and athletes of our time. I don't think it would be too farfetched to say that he is the Michael Jordan of his sport.

Tiger instills intimidation and fear in the opposing golfers (or something along those lines), and when he's at the top, he stays at the top.

Twelve majors is truly impressive, and when we're in a day in age when technology and people are a whole lot stronger, it makes the feat even more impressive.

If Tiger hasn't earned the rank as the best golfer ever, yet (over Nicklaus) then it seems he may only be seven majors away.

not only is tiger dominate right now, he has the rest of the guys mentally mind fucked. all of the guys yesterday were going out saying and knowning that they had to go -5 or better just to keep pace.
And that's why it's no fun to watch. Yesterday the announcers said something like "boy this is fun to watch" and I was thinking: no, it would be fun to watch if someone actually made a run at Tiger in the final round of a major instead of him running away with it or everyone else self imploding and Tiger just shooting par

I don't really dislike Tiger and I don't really root against him, but I do root for the guys on the leader board to play well enough to at least give him a challenge every now and then.

i enjoy watching it when tiger is that on. its amazing to see him play at that level. it just seems that too many of the guys out there feel the same way.

Yeah Tiger is all class, especially that move on Thursday when he missed the putt and decided it best to make a "jacking-off" motion. :shake:

I think you need a cool glass of:
