The 2006 PGA Championship--Official Thread

The courses are 10 times harder than they used to be.

Tiger would shoot a 65 hitting persimmon woods or graphite clubs.

Hey, you could be 100% right...I would love to see it though. Not so much because of club technology, but the ball technology is even farther ahead...I would love to see if one of Tiger pushes to the right ended up three fairways over instead of just in the trees a little. I want to see if these guys could hold a green with those round bricks the old-timers used to play with...

I've seen Tiger play in person, have you?

Other players cuss just like Tiger, certain players like Ben Crenshaw and John Daly smoke on the course.

God forbid Tiger show some emotion unlike 95% of the other stiffs on tour.

Because of his "intimidating nature" he has the largest galleries.

I see nothing but a guy that is a competitor who gets fired up, not someone trying to drum up crowd interaction to work against an opponent.

That's the most asinine thing I've read in quite some time.

Well, that's your opinion, Thump. And yes, I have seen Tiger play and in person in a win and a loss.

The game requires concentration, Thump. Tiger demands that he gets it and has a bloody heart attack if someone so much as breathes loudly. God forbid, if a camera shutter clicks but it's alright to jump all over the green and get the gallery stirred up so that the opponent doesn't get the same level of quiet in which to concentrate. You don't see the unfairness in that, then I guess we are both Tiger fans with different viewpoints.

that's why it's nauseating as hell to watch the players kiss his ass and kneel before him instead of actually just playing.

Some people just fold up under pressure...I respect the guy for not only performing and excelling under pressure, but also for exerting that pressure on his competition.

Legends are formed in those moments...as are goats.

yes, some people fold under pressure. apparently in golf, people also run up to tiger and whip out his dong and just go to town on it before play even starts on Sunday.

i've never seen anything like it in any other sport.

actually, it is. you can play your game the way you want it. nobody is playing defense on you. you don't need to know how every other player is doing.

Actually, it isn't--it's played on a course with varying weather, with a competing player alongside, with TV cameras and thousands of spectators lining every hole... Part of the game is psychological, dealing with the pressure and the unique circumstances of each hole, and using his own stature/presence to make his own circumstances more favorable is (a small) part of what makes Tiger better than his competitors. Jordan controlled his environment in much the same way.

Yeah, and he also played defense. The players who are so intimidated by super woods can just tune him out instead of saying to the papers Sunday morning "oh boy I just hope I can keep up with Tiger, xxxxxxxxxxx."

This was my point a few pages ago about the mental toughness issue...there were a lot more players in Jack's day who didn't fold their tent and tickle his balls just because he was on the leaderboard. It's like the entire tour has learned helplessness...if Tiger doesn't shoot +5 the first day, they all just assume he is going to win...or else one guy stands up and tries to battle him, and the other 70 and ties are busy twaddling him...it's like it's just what everyone expects, which is understandable from the fans, but not the other players.

I'm not really a Tiger "fan" just a golf fan who appreciates good golf.

You talk about Tiger pumping his fists etc... well what about Nicklaus raising his arms after holing that eagle at Augusta in 86, or Tom Watson running across the green at Pebble Beach in 82 after his chip in on 17 against Jack, or Seve Ballesteros's repeated emotional outbursts throughout his career?

Tiger's just an emotional guy, he's not just turning it on for the cameras or to hurt an opponent.

It's just unbelievable how much people hate this guy. And I'm not talking about you Steve, just other friends of mine.

Is it really that unbelievable? He bitches and moans when a camera shutter goes off. He gets as much press as the Yankees(which by definition is too much). He demands appearance fees that are greater than some payouts.

I'd be willing to give him a pass on the amount of air time he gets because a) he can't controll that and b) he's in an age where reporters shove people down our throats more than ever......but that's the most annoying aspect of the Tiger love fest.

On Sunday a lot of the crowd was for Luke Donald , all the LUUUUUUUUKKKKE yelling...what did Tiger do..birdied the first hole and took the lead. How did Tiger's so called antics effect Phil, Garcia and others. He only played with Donald. Every Player on the PGA tour would throw a fit if a 100 cameras were clicking on their back swing. Jack had to take a lot of crap from Arnie's army on the course early in his career but he just went out and won. Maybe the great players of his era are too comfortable playing for second..plenty of momey and less attention..
