I wondered how bad it could get this year.

It's past the point of no return. Firing the assistants won't do anything. Ohio doesn't have someone who could be a top 40 guy till Mitchell in 2019. Thads so damaged at this point even if we fired the assistants he won't get any good ones because they know he's a dead man walking. Recruiting is gonna be hard because of that

Best case scenario save one of recruits being an under the radar 1st round pick is we limp along the next two years. Not sure even if everyone comes back it can get any better unless Wesson is the second coming of Sullinger

We joke about and dismiss another coach saying he's dying, but health issues have been a concern for some time (specifically, his back, if I'm not mistaken), which could be one of the factors in the decline of the program.

I don't think it's crazy to think that is part of the issue. Less time and energy for recruiting, reviewing film, coaching and so on.

Which is what makes the lie so pathetic. His limitations, shelf life and decline are all giant targets for negative recruiting and instead they just made up nonsense.

And what is known is that next year the team will likely not make the tournament unless there is some sort of miraculous improvement in these guys

So most of the same team with the 10th ranked recruiting class in the B1G coming in and somehow it's all going to be better next year?

Gene and Thad are in serious denial here.

Kaleb Wesson, a 6'9/300lb Center. #76 ranked prospect per scout. He ain't Jared Sullinger.
Braxton Beverly, a 5'10/160lb PG, fringe prospect from Hargrave Military Academy. He can score, but he's tiny. Maybe he surprises, but given the way guys have "developed" here in recent memory, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Neither prospect would have been much more than afterthoughts when Matta was recruiting at a high-level. In short, there ain't much coming in to give reason for any kind of significant improvement next season.

We have three commitments so far for 2018. Their national rank (scout): 65, 80, NR.

It's bleak.

My feeling all along is that Thad Matta took this team to 2 Final Fours, a number of conference titles (regular season and tournament), and he's the all-time winningest coach in program history; he can stay as long as he wants. I just don't know why he wants to stay. I feel terrible for the guy. Grew up in Hoopeston, Illinois with a coach for a dad. Terrific ballplayer in his own right, having started at Butler for two years. Blistering start to his college coaching career with a rocketing trajectory. The guy is only 49 years old.

And yet here we are. Back problems have stolen the game of basketball from him. This game has been such a HUGE part of his life. It's really sad to me.
