Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

My feeling all along is that Thad Matta took this team to 2 Final Fours, a number of conference titles (regular season and tournament), and he's the all-time winningest coach in program history; he can stay as long as he wants. I just don't know why he wants to stay. I feel terrible for the guy. Grew up in Hoopeston, Illinois with a coach for a dad. Terrific ballplayer in his own right, having started at Butler for two years. Blistering start to his college coaching career with a rocketing trajectory. The guy is only 49 years old.

And yet here we are. Back problems have stolen the game of basketball from him. This game has been such a HUGE part of his life. It's really sad to me.
It is sad. I've said all along, I love Thad Matta, the person. He won at a tremendously high-level doing things the right way. He made tOSU basketball exciting after years of crap and scandal. He's one of the good guys in a sport corrupted by scumbags. I HATE that it's come to this. But it's a results-based business, and the results are not there. Thad Matta is one of the highest paid coaches in the sport, and his program is currently at the bottom of the barrel in a mediocre conference, with no signs that things have any chance at getting better. His legacy deserves to be what he did from 2005-12, but the longer he hangs around, the further that tremendous run gets in the rear-view mirror, and the more the crap we have now becomes a part of it.

Again he clearly stated he will be back next year... that is subject to change but for now you can expect him on the team.
Lyle confounds me. He clearly is a talented player, but he makes so many bone-headed decisions, it's mind-boggling. I think, overall he played much better when he went to the bench and started serving as the 6th-man. But he still went through periods where you wonder just what the fuck he's doing out there. I don't think you can put him back in the starting lineup over CJ Jackson. Maybe move him off the ball and let him play opposite Jackson? Kam is just occupying a roster spot. I'm not sure why he gets as many minutes as he does other than there's nobody else. He doesn't defend, and his supposed "strength" is being a shooter...except he can't really shoot. Maybe plug Lyle into his spot. Hell if I know. It's just a mess.

37th highest paid coach in college basketball, makes more than Urban Meyer, and the results don't justify it.

Just saying - because I have heard this several times - Matta only made more than Meyer in a single calendar year (2015) because of a deferred compensation bonus of $3M which finally kicked in after 8 years of accrual. Aside from that, Urban currently makes $2M+ more than Matta annually.

Thad is paid as a top ten coach in his sport. He's no longer producing at a level commensurate with that compensation. Our program is swirling down the drain, there's nothing on the recruiting trail to suggest an elite-level team is imminent, and he's presided over all of it.
I was just being pedantic about the Meyer comparison. But yeah, he is making serious bucks, and we are not seeing anything close to top-10 results.

Ohio college basketball attendance: Dayton Flyers lead for second straight year

Considering our arena has about 5,000 more seats, this is especially sad.
I wonder when this Sports headline was going to be posted. Maybe there is more to do in Columbus then Dayton. Indiana had the same record as Ohio State in the Big Ten and they never had any empty seats. Of course, they are not very good in football either. The same can be said of other teams in the Big Ten but maybe there is just more to do in good old Columbus Ohio :boogie:

Kaleb Wesson, a 6'9/300lb Center. #76 ranked prospect per scout. He ain't Jared Sullinger.
Braxton Beverly, a 5'10/160lb PG, fringe prospect from Hargrave Military Academy. He can score, but he's tiny. Maybe he surprises, but given the way guys have "developed" here in recent memory, I wouldn't get my hopes up.
I know that you know Wesson does not weigh 300 lbs. plus he is pretty agile for a guy his size and as an added bonus he can shoot free throws and make them.
Regarding Beverly, I know you have read the latest post on him in his recruiting thread (most people do not) and he seems to be a pretty good playerIMO I would not be knocking either of these guys until I see them play at the college level.
We have three commitments so far for 2018. Their national rank (scout): 65, 80, NR.
I like the three records for 2018 especially Goodwin. You have to remember that these guys are only juniors in high school and will certainly get better by the time they enroll as Buckeyes. Plus, they are 3 out of the best 5 players in the state of Ohio if you go by rankings which I find difficult to do especially in basketball.

I'm guessing if we had won the conference title last year and beat UNC and Kansas during the OCC, our attendance would have been significantly better.

I don't think any of our '18 signed frosh are instant help. As an example, Aherns is about as good as his brother was in HS and as a sophomore, he is playing a fairly minor role on an MSU team that went 10-8 in conference. I do think in a couple of years they can be a solid core of a good team if we can land a really good PG.
