Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

In fairness, we don't know that for a fact. He did at least once say he learned everything about recruiting from Sean Miller ... whose assistant coach was criminally charged today. I don't believe Matta was dirty, but today's news certainly doesn't clear him from any possible wrongdoing.

I think if you go through recruiting threads here, going back at least 10 years, such as OJ Mayos, you can literally see how Matta or the staff would quickly sour at the slightest hint of a "third uncle" being involved.

Lots and lots of top guys the staff walked away from.

I bet you said the same thing about Jim O'Brien. Again, nobody was proven innocent today.
I take it you'll be rebuking Mark Titus too?

Also the basketball team drove around in absurdly average vehicles while their football counterparts got the hookup. I remember seeing Oden piling into an absurdly small SUV with a few other Thad 5 guys as they left the WHAC

Like I said, no one was proven innocent. This was the tip of the iceberg. It is presumptuous to say anybody is in the clear.

Mark was on roster during the most prolific basketball recruiting in school history. I'm guessing he knows what he is talking about.

So again I'll ask, is he full of crap when talking about Simmons or not?

I never said I actually believe Matta was dirty at this time, but I feel no one is truly beyond doubt in college basketball, and nothing would surprise me. I really don't care what Titus says.

decided to visit the matta thread because i was curious what your recent comments were about matta. i expected nothing different. :roll1:
His line of thinking makes zero sense. So, after all this time paying players and bringing in Top 5 classes, Matta just decides to quit playing the game because...why exactly? Why would Thad completely give Kobi Simmons the cold shoulder if he wasn't against paying players? Why did he lose out on prospects like Goodluck Okonoboh who was, by many accounts, signed and delivered until UNLV swooped in at the last minute? You mean to tell me Thad wouldn't have busted out the checkbook after the less than stellar results last year if he he didn't mind paying players?

Sure Jan.

Ohio State men's basketball | Records show fall-off in recruiting ...
The Columbus Dispatch-Dec 28, 2017
Former Ohio State men's basketball coach Thad Matta led the Buckeyes to the most-successful 13-year stretch in school history but in his last five seasons put in fewer hours on the recruiting trail, according to the official recruiting logs for the men's basketball program examined by The Dispatch. [Brooke ...

I cannot access the article above because I do not have access and do not want to register but it is my understanding from someone who read this article that one of the main reasons that Thad was terminated was because he sort of stopped recruiting. The Ohio State Athletic Department has to keep track of visits and money spent on recruiting trips and that amount had fallen significantly over the past several years. I do not know if it was because of Matta's back and his general health problems or if it was because he was just tired of the way other coaches were recruiting against him.

If someone has access to this article, perhaps they could "summarize" it for us.
