Texas Longhorns (big hat, no cattle; please don’t Horns Down us)

I have to admit, I never realized this was even possible. I thought if the winner elects to defer, that automatically meant the loser gets to receive the opening kickoff. I remember many years ago, when I actually played football on a competitive level, the only other question after the receive/defer one was which goal to defend...

So, rule question: If your team loses the toss and does choose to kick, would that mean that in the second half you would receive, or would the opposing team still get the ball first? Seems like the latter would apply, which leads to another question: wtf were they thinkin'?

The winner of the coin toss gets two choices. Do they want to decide what to do now, or at the half. If they want the ball, they choose to decide now and take the ball. If they want the ball to start the second half, they choose to make the decision at the half.....at which point they'd choose to take the ball.

If they choose to defer, then the question goes to the team that lost the toss. Do you want the ball, or to kick? Since this is the only time you get to make this decision...only a moron would choose to kick.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marty_Mornhinweg

His most notable moment as a head coach came during a 2002 game against the Chicago Bears. The game went into overtime, and the Lions won the ensuing coin toss. However, Mornhinweg felt that having the wind in his favor was more important than getting the ball, despite having Jason Hanson (who hit a then-NCAA record 62-yard field goal in his college days at Washington State University) as his kicker. He elected to kick, rather than receive. As it turned out, the Lions never got the ball; on the Bears' opening drive, Chicago scored a field goal to win the gam

:slappy:Maybe tsun should consider him to replace hoke, if they have to make a change.

Defer is the default position for most teams. Tressel used to drive me nuts by taking the ball first.

A new Barrett or Swoopes thread popped up on the first page in the football forum last night on Shaggy. They are so butthurt.

Well, it's tough to be the best athletic department in the best university in the best city in the best state in America while having a profound sense of entitlement that it's their manifest destiny to challenge for the NC every year....................yet on the field having only been truly relevant for one 5 year window over the last 36 years.

Somebody will need to get kicked in the balls.

Strong not happy

Strong's first season at Texas started with several dismissals and ends at 6-7. While Strong was stern with his words, he did hold back a bit. The rest is coming in the spring.

“It will be a strong message,” Strong said. “I really thought about it now. I just don't want to say something to them that I may regret later, but the message will be very clear to them.”
