We all wish you luck Alan...

However, as Clarity alluded to earlier, this thread is about the future of BP...out of respect for the man who made this place happen and the site's birthday, we should keep the discussion on topic.

Thanks for understanding.

I'm a semi newbie and here's my take.

Load up speed is the biggest nightmare but BP is obviously addressing that problem. BTW, I love my T-shirt and will send money for the fund raiser, I promise.

Started out as an Ozone fanatic but it got old going through a thousand posts to get to a couple gems. Also hated when a good post had rotated off the screen. BP's setup does a great job of addressing these issues.

Definitely feel an insecurity complex here concerning BN and I can't understand why. I think BN's premium content is second to none and is my home page because of their inside recruiting and player information. I can never get tired of reading posts from Duane and Bill Greene. However, I skim over ninety percent of the other posters, as I'm sure many of them do mine. I never spend any time on their free sites and instead come here. They have too many posters that have limited experience in life yet don't hesitate to tell us how to live it.

Rumor central is definitely my favorite part of BP. However, I hate when people say they know something but aren't going to post it. If you're not going to share it, please don't bring it up.

I felt when I first came here that there was the "in" crowd and then everybody else. However, after spending some time on here, I've seen a lot of the "in" people going at each other and I've noticed it's common knowledge that a lot of them are homos. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Like the way you have separated political from other open discussions. Politics and religion can obviously be very volatile and it's nice to be able to skip over them when not in the mood.

I do have a problem with those stinkin chicklets. I got just one anonymous rep message and suddenly my page is full of red. The anonymous part really bugs me. How about letting us at least respond to Mr Anonymous. Also, if a homo doesn't like my post(has to be a homo to not like my post, right?), why should I get more than one chicklet per offended homo. What happened with me is the chicklets have become inconsequential. I see a lot of red on a poster and just figure he must have pissed off some big shot.

In closing, Clarity, I like your vision and you've obviously got some good people like osugrad21 helping you to achieve it. Buena Suerte.

Pluses:
BP is free
BP adapts itself to different topics, from Buckeye football to politics
BP provides the most comprehensive Buckeye coverage I have found
BP gives me a forum to shamelessly promote the OSU rugby team

Minuses:
Again the rep system needs some work, although I like Mili's ideas
BP Book - we could be doing more with this
the "unwritten rules" - different sets of guidelines for different forums, which can be confusing for new posters who can't find the "rules" thread

This was the best statement by anyone as of yet and I thought this should be addressed. I think that if the new members of the board would take the time to get to know the posters of BP they would not feel like the are being ganged up on. Like I said earlier, it really is a family atomsphere here and once you're in... well you're in. Unless you are someone named Donny, IITG, Tibor, NDChump or BretGoBlow

OK. A lot of you are trying to be so politically correct...whatever. This is the first that I have ever heard of a BII. So, I did the search...went to the site...looked around...and determined that it is "another Buckeye website"...just as Buckeye Planet, Bucknuts, O-Zone, BSB, etc... are all Buckeye websites. Why are some of you "dancing around" of calling it what it is? Is it a rival site to Buckeye Planet? In some ways, it is...depends on how you define a rival website. They target the same "customers" (though Buckeye Planet doesn't charge money). I used to check out the O-zone, then I got involved with Bucknuts, now I like Buckeyeplanet. Do I check Bucknuts or Ozone any more? Very rarely, because I can pretty much find out all the information I need and interact via message boards right here. There will be those who check out this "BII" and then choose to go exclusively to it. Does that hurt BuckeyePlanet? I wouldn't think so, since BuckeyePlanet doesn't charge money. It looks to me like it is just another place for fans to go. The only connection that I can see to here is that Dihard used to post on here...get vicious at times....changed his name to Alan....all of a sudden is an "insider" (and a born-again Christian)...and now is starting up his own gig. What's the problem? Good luck with that.

As far as this site goes...
+
1. The members...some of the best personalities around.
2. Management...Clarity is just amazing, and he has selected great mods.
3. Arcade....can't believe it is all for free
4. v-money...Although I think there are great possibilities for improvements
5. Rep system...just another great feature that makes it fun to hang out around here.

There's no political correctness or avoidance. I just had the deluded notion that I could keep this thread on topic enough, that when it had grown to several pages, it would still be concise enough that I could use it as a direct reference as I rebuild the site from scratch on the new server, making some new changes along the way.

I *still* want to do that. So to that end, I've made the following thread. Both to inform, and to give a means by which BII can be discussed, without it polluting the information I'm trying to gather here.

http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?p=196662#post196662

So, let's stick to the topic at hand. And if you have something to say about the other issue, let's take it to the other thread.

Cheat sheet: BP = 2 years old and wants to keep improving. BII = a welcome and happy addition to the community, born from this very site, and closely related in many ways -- but its own entity. BP+BII = a ton of potential going forward. On their own, and collaberatively.

Positives:
1) The site has no pre-defined static self-image. As Clarity has said over and over, BP is a fluid project that goes in the direction its members wish to take it. Some (most?) of the best features of BP have come from member suggestions.

2) Recruiting forums. No other site has compiled as much pertinent info - while still allowing a uniform place for discussion - as BP. And everything is kept organized and uncluttered (at least imo).

3) Community - BP is a place I go to shoot the shit. A geat way to get away from it all.

Negatives:
1) The rep system. It completely sucks and is a waste of CPU. Anybody that's been around here for more than a week can tell who is more highly thought of and who isn't. All it does is create headaches, work, questions, and bitching. Get rid of it completely.

2) Too many threads evolve into personal pissing matches that should be kept off the boards. At some point in time it becomes too tough to moderate large threads with splitting and merging. All of us, from admins & mods to newbs, need to have more self control...

3) Which leads me to point 3. There's no reason to call somebody a "fucking deuchebag" because you disagree with them. It just makes you look worse. Have some self contol. You fucking deuchebags :)

A lot of this will echo the thoughts of others...

Positives:

1. Free - In cost and in action...By the people, for the people.
2. Community - It's funny how we've all developed our "niche" over here and how such varied personalities have fit together to make this site what it is. It just seems like there are a lot of people that really care about one another.
3. Leadership - This goes for Clarity and the Mods. I don't think many realize just how selfless they are. They devote so much of their personal lives to this without complaint or compensation. They lead by example, keep direction and only change that direction with the consent of the site.
4. Innovation/Features - BP doesn't shy away from setting a standard or doing something new. Graphics, Videos, Arcade, vBetting, T-Shirts, Rep System, Stats Engine, Blogs, Etc.
5. Visiting Fans - I LOVE outside opinions about the Buckeyes and, for the most part, I am very happy with how they've been welcomed on. I think that a growing base of outside fans will only increase the value of this board and help foster a larger community with "sister-sites" such as O-state.com.

Negatives:

1. Reputation Abuse - The system is a great idea and I think it adds value to the site. What bothers me is the constant whining about dings, politicing for rep, inflated rep, people getting caught up in "rankings", non-mods gaining information about who gives rep to whom. I think it just needs tidying up.
2. Scapegoats - While occasional barbs, when made in jest, are fun...It is very easy to get into a mode where a certain poster becomes an easy target. Pretty soon you have multiple threads dedicated to Donny, Tibor, Etc. I admit that a poster makes his own reputation, but I think it is out of hand when any statement they make is immediately dismissed based on who they are.
3. Work Friendliness - In my opinion, if I have the censoring on, read the *** le of a thread carefully and stay out of the RR, I should be able to navigate the site without surprises at work. Suggestive signatures were a problem and I had to turn them off (I'm not sure that should be necessary, but I'll give in on that one). While a random hot chick in a thread is fun while at home, it's a very uncomfortable moment when at work. Also, large font's with explitives (even when censored) can be a little much.
4. Message Creating/Editing - Does anyone else have trouble with their messages formatting wierd or your curser jumping an extra line when pressing enter?
5. Not Enough Time - I don't have the same time to spend at BP as I used to. All this cool stuff is going on and my ability to be here is diminishing faster and faster. This place is addicting and it's hard to not be here as much.

2. Mods/admins "overmoderating": Not even close to "Das Posten Gestapo" over on Bucknuts. If you look at most of the edited/closed/deleted threads, they usually got that way because they were duplicates, violated board rules, or were flat out stupid. The percentage of such action per the amount of posts is very small.
I want to address this as well. To be honest, I'm kind of surprised that this is perceived as a negative from some of you. I think the mod's here do an excellent job of letting the board "self-police", and we always try to post or PM people that are crossing the line before resorting to anything more severe. BP strives to provide an outlet for all kinds of personalities and behavior, and naturally, some of those personalities will clash with others. I would ask any of you guys that made this complaint to reply to this thread with ideas on how you think we mod's could do a better job. Ideally, mod's wouldn't even be needed, but the reality says otherwise. The biggest problems usually come from posters either starting threads in the wrong forum, or straying from a thread's topic. Those types of things need to be dealt with, and 99% of the time, the thread will either be moved or split. The other semi-consistent problem comes when two (or more) posters get into pissing matches in the middle of a thread...those types of arguments are better handled privately (usually), or at least in their own threads. Users need to utilize the features provided by BP to avoid these problems - use PM, or the "ignore" feature.

Grad, sorry I wasnt clearer.....I didn't mean any particular site when i mentioned the changes coming to message boards...

I spoke with Steve Snapp yesterday and the future of ALL sports message boards are being examined....

I've never been involved with a message board before this one. I think the Vanilla Gorilla had one a while ago (2001, maybe?), and I think I joined Bucknuts, but it appeared WAY too confusing, and I never posted on it. Therefore, I don't know how much my opinion matters in this case. But here goes:

Positives
1. Free. I never would have joined if I had to pay money. And I think if it was no longer free, I wouldn't pay. I don't mind donating, but when you make people pay, it loses appeal to me. (There's a good way to get rid of Zurp - make him pay for it. It's still free to everyone else.)
2. Well organized. It didn't take me long to figure out what's going on and not to "garbage the boards." (Though the first thing I did when I joined was "garbaged the boards.")
3. Rep system. I know this is a negative to most people, but I think it's a positive. Maybe it needs to be tweaked, but I like that some jerk-ass who joins just so he can piss people off for a few minutes and then get banned can't affect people's reps. I don't know that it makes much sense that Mili or some of the guys with more rep points should be able to make or break someone's rep with a single +/-. Someone else had the idea of weighting your own +/- for someone's thread. Like, maybe I want to give this guy a 30% ding, and then this guy a 70% anti-ding (or whatever it's called).
4. People USUALLY don't get pissed off when they don't understand that someone is joking. Sometimes it's hard to see when sarcasm is used, or when someone is joking, as you can't see facial expressions or the tones of voice.
5. Tibor. Is he a real person? Or did someone create an alter-screenname to get the dings, while his "true" screenname gets the greens? He's like the guy on the radio shows who ALWAYS disagrees with common sense, just so they can make an arguement. (For those of you who ever listen to Rover's Morning Glory, Deeter.) I'm not saying we need more Tibors, but we need the one.

Negatives:
1. Dingings. I'll jump on the bandwagon and say that people should sign their dings. I would at least like to be able to PM the guy who dinged me so I can explain my point, or explain that I was joking. Maybe you guys are on to something about the way the system automatically signs your name.
2. Search Function. Maybe I shouldn't complain, because at least there is a search function. It may be more work than it's worth to improve it, but when I first joined, I posted a thread that was already established and quite big (Zwick vs. Smith). I was told to use the search function. I've tried the search function a few times since, looking for little things, and it comes up with a bunch of stuff that doesn't have anything to do with what I'm looking for. Sometimes it's easier to post a question in the wrong spot, and get scolded by a mod, and then it gets moved to wherever I'm looking for the answer. I think that people should either be more forgiving, or maybe the search function can be improved. (I know NOTHING about search functions, so don't get frustrated if this request seems too difficult to do.)
3. Along the same lines, some threads are HUGE (Texas game thread, for example). If I have a question for Horns fans about, say, their tight end, I'm not going to read through 75 pages of posts to see if it's already been answered. I think people should be more forgiving of this.

That's all I can think of. After 2 1/2 months here, I give the site A+. The pros FAR outweigh the cons.

I totally agree with this and don't know how I forgot it. I've had the same problem. I can't tell if the Search function just searches titles or keywords within posts, and if that's why it will give you 300 posts to search through if you're looking for Zwick vs. Smith.

Agree with this as well, certain mods seem to gets their jollies from reaming a poster a new one for not reading a thread or using the search function.

I TOTALLY understand the need to keep the board cleaned up but people don't have time to read 75 pages to see if something has been posted yet in fear of getting publicly reamed.

I do understand that this is a tough thing to rectify though.
