Search, then Advanced search

BrutMax,

I tried that yesterday trying to find an old post and had one hell of a time getting to find what I wanted. Not sure what the problem was but thanks for the heads up.

Great things:

1. Free board with freedom of speech.

2. Thread organization. Compared to other boards, it's excellent. I can hardly look at some of the other tOSU boards that I used to scan more than once a day. This is really highlighted on the recruiting boards, where everything for the player is in one thread.

3. Sense of humor. For the most part, folks have one, especially in the open forum.

4. Features that I don't even know about yet. I still learn about something almost every week.

Negative things:

1. People bitching about reps and dings. How many times does it have to be said that the rep system can be disabled if you don't like it? And as far as anonymous dings, it's bullshit for the spineless bastards to do it, but that's their option - people have the abililty to be jackasses on this board. It will catch up to them. Note - I think that dinging people for bitching about dings is a good thing that should continue.

2. People bitching about what the mods are doing or not doing. I'm not saying that the mods should be gods, or that they shouldn't be criticized occasionally. But when you are about to bitch about something that a mod has or hasn't done, just realize that they are doing their thing on a volunteer basis. Think about how much of a pain it is to split a 10-page thread because some of us got off track or out of line. And then consider respectfully pointing out what you perceive to be the inappropriate action/inaction.

Criticism is always welcomed IMHO...this stuff requires many judgment calls that must be made quickly. Many times, I have made the wrong decision. However, I don't think anyone can say that I don't take time to explain things in PMs...and I know the others do as well. PMs are the key as nobody likes to be called to task on the boards...although sometimes it does end up that way. A simple PM is much more effective than posting in the threads with "Would a Mod please..." or "Mods need to..." or even just the outright complaining about a decision.

I don't ask that everyone likes every decision, but I do expect everyone to return the respect we try to show...

Out of the pulpit now...

One more minor negative thing...the search function ignores words of three characters or less as "too short" ("DVD", "'07", etc.). Sometimes those short words are critical in the search (I'm going to start tracking down all the '07 recruits soon to start a database for the '07 recruiting season, but I can't use the site's search function to search for "'07" in the thread title, which would be perfect). The Google search doesn't allow for searching titles only. Hopefully there's a way to turn off the length check in the search function.

That should be easily fixable via the vbulletin admin stuff. I am not sure who to ask about it though, or who has access to it I should say.

I am kinda surprised at how well this site functions, I have never been a big fan of vbulletin at all. So I cant really list a complaint about anything.

I hang out at several boards and most won't let you search for fewer than three or four letters. I think it is the PHP software.

As a male lesbian the only trouble I have with this board is the ridicule we receive.:)

This is like any community. We form relationships and are initially suspicious of new comers. I will say as others have mentioned once the board got critical mass the regulars and mods got after someone that did not do a search first. It is a learning process. Remember we were all virgins or newbies once.

Another recommendation is increasing the jpeg size allowed to be used for avatars.

I know when I was searching for my avatar, almost all of the one's out on the web were too big.

I know there's probably a way to save and shrink them but I'm not that computer savvy.

In my opinion, the thing that rocks about BP are the people that come here. The rest is just detail. I don't know another place where people with such diversity in age, culture and lifestyle, but sharing one passion, can come together and treat each other with such incredible respect. It means so much to me to have this contact after so many years away from Buckeye sports. I don't have any gripes. It just rocks.

Kidding of course...I just couldn't resist. :tongue2:

If you ever need one shrunk, Thump, let me know. I'll have it back to you within the day and may even be able to make modifications or find something you'd like if the one you found isn't exactly what you wanted. I stay away from animated ones because it takes a lot of time, but static Avatars are easy and I enjoy it.

Same goes for any of the graphic folks here probably. Never hesitate to ask us...I usually have a quick turnaround from the time I get a PM.

Here's a nice Brian Boitano image that should do just fine for your avatar

Open it with Paint click on Image/ Stretch/Skew and reduce the size by however much you think it's over the size you need it to be.
