Tennessee's next Head Football Coach

Since they blew the last two head coaching opportunities they had, it's critical to the chawbacon's that they hit the mark on this one. I'm sure they'd love Bobby P, but he has too much baggage so they'll resist that urge and pass.

Cutcliffe just signed an extension so he's out.

Since Auburn is such a trainwreck right now, they're no competition for UT for a new coach. The main competition for UT would be Arkansas. Sure, UT has more money at their disposal but Ark. has some big money backers(and Strong is from the state) that would front them money to hire the right coach. My money is on Strong to go to one of these two schools. Once Strong leaves Louisville, we win the Quick derby so I'll be happy to see him go to either school.

I hear Arkansas is making a strong push for Art Briles. He's kind of "Petrino-lite," so I think he'd be a good choice.

As for Tennessee, expect a very strong push for Charlie Strong or Kirby Smart. Auburn is likely to run at Smart also.

This may be the most outlandish Jon Gruden coaching rumor yet.

WREG-TV in Memphis, Tenn. reported Tuesday night that the ESPN NFL analyst has an offer on the table to become the next head coach of the University of Tennessee with an interesting twist. According to the report, Gruden would be getting an ownership stake in the Cleveland Browns as part of the deal.

New Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is a major Tennessee booster and played on the offensive line for the Volunteers in the early 1950′s, including the 1951 National Championship team.

The report does bring up a potential road blocks to this ever coming to fruition. Gruden may still be owed money from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from his time as head coach that ended with his firing in 2008. Apparently the league is looking into the conflict of owning a part of one team while potentially still getting paid from another franchise.

Here?s another possible hiccup. According to John Infante, who worked as a NCAA compliance officer at Colorado State University and ran the Bylaw Blog for the NCAA website, NCAA rules would prohibit this transaction unless the ownership stake was first gifted to the University of Tennessee. He says there is no rule prohibiting coaches being involved with pro teams but rather the issue has to do with outside compensation.

This deal seems a little too ridiculous to actually come together in the end. But with SEC football, there seems to be no limit to the distance schools will go to try and put the best possible team on the field. So maybe it?s not completely out of the question after all.

What job IS Gruden waiting for?! I mean, he has his pick of what job he wants right now, and you've got to think he wants to get back to coaching eventually...
Maybe he doesn't. Madden never went back into coaching. Maybe we'll all be playing "Jon Gruden Football 2025" a decade from now.

Maybe he doesn't. Isn't he getting paid almost as much money to work 17 days a year? For a work 20 hours a day guy like it sounded like he was MNF might be paradise.

edit- 2 minutes too late

Agreed. I think Gruden discovered the same thing that Cowher and Dungy discovered: This broadcasting thing is pretty sweet. Work what, 6 hours per day and get paid a healthy sum to talk about football. No stress, no pissed off fans/GM's/owners/players.......
